Looks like an interesting idea for cold~smoking in the trashcan. I'm thinkin' it'd be handy for dry~cured sausages...it is afterall sausage making season.

Unless it's meat...40 bucks is a bit much to put in a UDS so it'd have to be homemade.

Cool idea. The second link looked like galvanized pipe and after looking back at the first, i see he referred to this. Not cool

I forgot who it was, but someone on the boards got one of those recently... I think for Christmas. If you feel like searching you may be able to find his thoughts on it.

Yup, I got one for Christmas, it is aluminum (not galvanized). It's one of those items that is worth it because $40 aint so much. The aluminum pipe is actually ridged so it is much thicker than the one pictured. I got mine on ebay....or my wife got it for me. I am using a wooden crate for the cooking chamber. I placed some oven racks in it that I got out of my old oven, works like a charm. Just finished it yesterday. I didnt want to drill a hole in any of my smokers. The one possible drawback to using the drum would be the cavity size. Not sure that it would be so fuel efficient.

I see no problem with building one yourself....other than the fact that unless you had the pipe laying around, you would spend a few bucks for justa small section. Therefore, $40 is cheap like I said. Plus, I think the guy did a good job on ebay and I also think that he should be awarded for his ingenuity.

I'd probably buy one as a bong but not as a smoke generator for cold smoking. Most of you guys with UDS units alrady have ball valves for air intake. Try to picture building a mini UDS and connect its exhaust to the air intake of the 55-gallon UDS via aluminum dryer vent pipe. Now pressurize the intake air on the mini UDS with a hair dryer (or something similar) and you should be good to go.

The one I got has a battery operated aquarium pump. Supposed to last 48 hours on 2-D cells.

that is pretty cool. Cheaper than my work in progress...... Got a second UDS and am putting in multiple places to put racks all the way down. two birds with one stone. 1. Raise the firebox up so that I can grill or 2. Cold smoke via dryer duct from one exhaust to the other. I thought about using a thirty gallon drum to run it to two chambers at the same time.....

Is that technically a hijack?

Technically, it's running 2 UDS's in series.

How about a 80mm computer fan, or something close? I got an old computer that wouldn't miss it, but lack any idea how to get one of those fans to run off batteries...

I think the easiest way would be to get a 12 volt transformer and snip off the round shiney end and separate the wires.

I must have glazed over this earlier. That's a good point. If there were a way to hook up the stoker or guru that would work too.

I picked up a 55G and a 30G drum today originally thinking I would cut the 30G up as an ash pan(Mista Mod), but the thought of using it as a cold smoke generator seemed very cool and potentially could hook up 2 uds' if you had a way to push the air....

It could also make an a nice mini grill.

The Smoke Pistol is basically the same thing. Big Brother Smoke has one. It burns pellets but the tubes they come in are a lot more expensive than a sack of pellets.

Now I don't know about the smoke generator tony2... got but the one in the picture is definately galvanized. It appears to be fence post. You can buy electrical conduit that is a low grade aluminum alloy. If you want a quick way to make one use a 1 1/2" pipe nipple and a couple of caps. You could drill a hole in one and tap it for a pipe fitting. A fish aquarium pump works great. Here is one a guy made on another forum after I posted the one I made.

:-P It looks like a home made version of the smokepistol www.smokepistol.com (http://www.smokepistol.com). I have been using a smokepistol for about 4 years and it works great for both hot and cold smoking. It just seems like this is a complicated way to go about it when the smokepistol only costs about $40 and has an electronic control for the smoke output. The only caution I would suggest is NOT to use galvanized metal because it gives off poisonous fumes if it gets too hot otherwise it would have to work just like the smokepistol and they work great for cold smoking.
