Or which or you more likely to buy BBQ cookbooks or BBQ instructional videos? Just curious to see what thoughts are on this...

Books give you the recipes. Videos walk you through the entire process of how to trim your meat, rub it and how to cook it.
I own both, and think the videos were much more helpfull to me starting out in Q. But there were no folks around my neck of the woods at the time where I could get a mentor to start me out.
Hope this helps awnser your question?

I prefer cookbooks. The only instructional BBQ videos I need I get from Bigmista. I'm still waiting for the Brisket Sequel!

Voted for the cookbook cause it asked what you would buy. Really like the instructional videos. Wish more were available for free.

I like the videos because you can see whats being done.
But at the end of the day, I prefer a good cookbook.

BUT I find that it is MUCH easier to find and go to information in printed form.
It is cool to sit and watch a video BUT to go back and get info... It's the book or web EVERY time!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do not own either one. I do have a video that I recorded of a BBQ show from the food network one time. The kids taped over it.

I prefer books, although I can see where a video would be useful when it comes to procedure. A book can say apply a rub, but a video can show you how much. A book can say "a light wispy smoke", but a video could show you blue/white/grey smoke. A book will say to trim the brisket, a video could show you how and how much. All a matter of preference, I guess.

I'd choose both as they both have value.

Books in my opinion are better. Videos will usually, at least in my house, get broken. Kids love to leave them out to get stepped on at night, or hide them under something etc.... also I find with videos, they will usually get looked at one or two times, and then they do collect dust if they don't get broken. Books sit on my desk as they get used all the time, and they are a great place to make notes when I make mods to the recipe....

I choose the cook books because... I can flip through the recipies faster than I can load and scroll through the videos:icon_bigsmil

Books, because I can refer to them in the kitchen easier. Just the thought of trying to follow a recipe on video while outside or in the kitchen sounds liek a mess. Play, pause, get ingredient, mix, play, get ingredients, mix, rewind because I forgot to pause, play, repeat, etc.
I think there is a reason VHS and DVD has not wiped out the bookstore. Books are better. Can't say the same of many other things. Once the new thing comes out the older stuff almost always goes away, except for the book.

Books... Last time I made notes on while watching a video I made so many mistakes you couldn't see the TV because of all the white out...

I like the show/tell aspect of video that many cookbooks lack. A good cookbook is a minority.

neither. for business & comps i like to be original & any outside influence screws up my process(if that made sense & didn't sound cocky).

A sausage making cookbook with a DVD attached would be nice
For competition nothing beats classes although for newbies helping out a team is a first step. Amazing how much you can learn washing dishes if the head cook is say Rod Gray. Just ask Scottie.
For home recipes I like the internet and the Food TV site and watching their shows on Food Network.
