Found a source for FREE drum's, downside is they were full of latex primer
Drilled my 4 intake hole's last nite and started a fire, had it rolling for about 3 hrs. All the paint has seemed to burn off and with a lite hit with the wire wheel takes me down to bare metal....
Should i continue?? As long as i get down to metal i should be o.k. right?
These are the thicker steel drums with great sealing lid's and locking clamp's!!
If you guy's think these barrel's will be fine, i should have a new BUDS..(Bubba ugly drum smoker) by the end of the weekend and will continue with build pron!!

I wouldn't have though that they were used for latex would make a differance after it was burned off. My thinking is that whatever the coating that is used in other drums seems to be fine after burning and I wouldn't imagine it being any more toxic that those.
I vote continue the project.

Allright, no negative replie's so i'm moving forward..............scraped it out and wire wheeled most of it last nite, got some pic's but my printer is not playing nice
Found 3 4" caster's that i'll mount to the bottom, had all the nut's n bolt's for the grate support's, found 3 handle's leftover from my offset build, a weber grate from a garbage pick, and a charcoal basket already made for another project!!!
Only thing i bought so far is a 1" ball valve and a couple pipe nipples, keeping it cheap so far!!
I have a weber lid i'd like to use but do i have to cut off the lip for it to fit properly?? Anybody got any detail's on that??

Try not to cut the entire roll off of the top. On my second drum the Weber lid wouldn't fit. I used an angle grinder and some patience to go round and round until I got a nice snug fit. Give it a try!!!

On my drum( I get it next week!) we used a sledge hammer and regular hammer, placed the sledge on the inside of the lip and smacked the outside lip, like you do when removing dents from a car. Did that all the w3ay around and the lid fits perfect. Nice thing about that way is you can always go back.

There he goes again with the NTTAWWT.
Of course you are a drum head. I'm already assembling parts for my second and third. And this time I will put the castors on first - good idea.
To test for the paint - you might call around to one of the paint specialty stores and see if they have something you can test with?
Did you use a brush on a drill or a grinder? I'm getting one for my pneumatic today.

As i still cannot download my pic's, my UDS is completed and seasoning as we speak!!
Put 5# Rancher in my charcoal basket from my off-set and a 1/2 chimney of lit with some Mesquite about 1:30.
1 cap open and my ball valve 1/4 open and settled in at 235*.......5 HOURS AGO!!!
I am totally amazed at how these thing's run!! Lifted the lid to take a peak and have only burned about 1/2 of that charcoal, temp ran up to 270 from the blast of air and settled right back down to 230ish without touching a thing!!
Will be breaking it in this weekend with something, now to get some more part's for that other barrell!!

I have a total of 4 - 3/4" intake's with 1 being a ball valve.
Ran 1 cap off last night with the ball valve 1/4 open and ran a steady 235* with a 2" exhaust.
I'm working on a removeable ash pan that i cn lift out to clean.

If you slice a 35 gallon drum it makes a nice ash pan. Big Mista had one like that.

Another option would be to make the bottom of the stand for the coals to be a solid piece bowl so when you pull one out you pull the other out automatically.

I'm building it tomorrow - definitely have pics by then. essentially i'm taking a piece of sheet metal thick enough to stand up to the heat but thin enough to shape with some coaxing. I'm using the grate as template for size. Then I'm folding the side up and putting the expanded metal into it and bolting them together. Welding would be faster but I don't know when the welding equipment will be here tomorrow.
The expanded metal will then wrap the grate so bolted together as well and then the grate will fit in the middle with some welds. The square was ok, but it doesn't work as well as I'd like.
That's the idea and what I'm going to work on we'll see if it works out. I may have to shorten my air intake valves inside. If I can't get that to work, I'll just stick to shop vacing the thing out.

Well I may just have to build one of my own just to prove it would work, so there. It could be a perpetual smokin machine.
On another note my mom said you have to invite me over for supper, or she's callin your mom, so take that and put it in your non pellet burnin UDS and smoke that. And I'll be bringing my wife, two kids, two dogs, case of beer, your choice, and Divemaster, ya the Divemaster. We'll probably have to stop in Ada on the way back to pick up his Lang, hope for Divemasters sake that guard gog don't bite too deep. Ouch.:-o

CB, can you gve me more info on your 3 1/2 inch ash pan.
Give you an update. We built it today but we rant into a snag with the sheet metal. It turned out to be galvanized. It also took far longer to do than I thought it would.
I took a 17"W x 48"L strip of expanded metal and cut it down the middle. Halfway through my circular saw's metal cutting blade ran out of blade. Then I broke out the rip saw I got for my air compressor. That would run for about 1 minute before it would go through a whole 8 gallon's of air. I tried that for about 30 minutes cut, wait, cut wait. ok, now the sawzall. That is impossible by yourself. So I stopped with like 10
Broke down and went to get more circular blades. Finished that. Took the grate and used it to roll the expanded metal. One of the two strips went about halfway around. Took some 3" long bolts and bent them about 1/2" down. Put 2 1" washers under the bolt head and slit it through the grate into the side of the expanded metal side. The grate was 3" from the bottom of the metal. I did this all the way around and then took the other strip and ran it around the other. That took forever. It would have been so much easier to weld but my buddy was a no show.
The ash pan. Took a 3x3 piece of sheet metal. traced the grate(before attatching it to the siding). Drilled a small hole in the middl of the circle and attached a string to a permanent marker. Using the string, guided it around 2" around the grate circle. Then I started cutting again. WOW. Went through 2 circular metal blades. Got it done though. With some tin snips I cut it every 4 inches. I put the fire box around it and tapped them into place. Almost fired it up. Putting the tools and stuff away saw the galvanized on the rest of the metal and pulled it off. Will post pics tomorrow as it took so long had to start cooking the steaks.
