It was my momma that taught me to cook. She raised seven of us own her own. She always told us we were going to know every thing we needed too to take care of ourselves. As the rest of my brothers and sisters, I can sew too.

Are you my twin or what?? Momma raised four boys and we can all cook, knit, sew, run a sewing mechine, clean, ect. She felt the same way as yours in saying we would never have to depend on anyone to get through life.

Man I feel like calling her and my pops now. :)

I'm making a trip to Georgia this weekend to give mine a hug. The 42 pounds Of Jimmy Dean she has in her freezer has nothing to do with me going. I have to come back the next day so it is a short visit. There is a Brethren in my hometown. Thinking of sending him a pm to meet up and say hello while there.

Jacob, a mighty fine layout there. Lots like our traditional New Years feed.
That Cracklin Cornbread almost brought a tear to my eye.

You and KY talking about your mom's teaching you to cook and all the other stuff you need to know--that did bring a tear. Sounds just like my mom, only diff is I can't go hug her anymore.

Jacob, what part of Ga you going to. I am from south Ga myself.

I'll be headed to North Ga. Dalton to be exact. Mom just got out of the Hospital, she had pneumonia and didn't call me until she was home again. She's still trying to look out for me, but I guess thats what moms do.

You should pass right by Marietta on your way up I-75. Let me know if you might want to grab a beer.

Sorry to hear about your mom. Glad she is better. Mine would have done the same thing--dont want to worry us, you know.
Have a safe trip.

Done quite a bit of security and investigation work in your area years ago. Sadly this time were going up 20/59 then back down through Chattanooga into Ga.
My wifes pain specialist is in Marrietta. Next time I bring her in I'll Pm ahead of time. Usually takes hours with nothing for me to do.

man, that looks really good jacob!

can you share that cornbread recipe?

I don't think I have ever followed a recipe for corn bread. I learned from many years of watching. I will share a story before I share how I make it. Wouldn't be me if I didn't add a story now would it.

As I said Mom raised seven on her own. To keep us together as a family she worked most all the time. So the older siblings had to take care of a lot of the household chores to help mom out. All by choice and out of love. I was the middle child, 12 years old. Cornbread was te first thing I got to start making by myself for supper. It became my regular chore so to speak. I have always loved to cook, just hate the cleanup.

Cracklin Cornbread
? 3 cups cornmeal
3 eggs slightly beaten
1/4 cup vegetable oil
Buttermilk
1 cup cracklins
In a large bowl mix the eggs, cornmeal, and oil. Stir, and then start adding buttermilk a little at a time, You want a good consistency, don't let it get to soupy, it will not cook through. Add cracklins. If it get too thick after adding the cracklins add more Buttermilk. Put in a cast iron skillet and bake in a 400 degree oven until golden brown. Usually will take 20 to 30 minutes.

I use three eggs for cracklin cornbread because the extra egg helps to soften the cracklins so you can chew them easier.

Even with all mom had on her plate, I can remember several times when she took in friends of my older siblings in because they had no place to call home.
Here in the south if your honest and kind you will always find a friend who is willing to feed you if hungry. Folks now a days have to be more careful with all the violence that is around. So they might hand you a plate with one hand while holding a shotgun in the other. But they will feed you.

There more in keeping with the family tradition than anything else. Although good, I would prefer a big pot of pintos or great northern beans.

That plate makes me wanna move home. It seems soup is the tradition that crosses all cultures for New Years. We had Ozoni soup at my house.

You may not want to know, but it's nothing more than bacon just comes from the jaw(mouth) of the pig. Not near as good as the pickled pigs feet.

Dude, that looks really good, but I have to admit I am a dumbass, I have never eaten any of it.

Until I found the web, I thought everyone eat this kind of food. Since, I found I can be unique in certain areas with my cooking + even get strange looks sometimes.

Man that looks good (oatmeal mod)...

I too had to learn how to cook... When I was 9 my Mom broke her leg and being the oldest I did all the cooking... Joke in the family now that I'm 47, I'm thinking that her leg may have healed and she's just not telling me since I'm still bringing over the 'Care Packages' once every couple of weeks.... The new quote from her is "Now don't forget to bring some of those 'Fatty' things..." Gotta love Mom's!!!

Jacob,

My suggestion is to get to an emergency room immediately and get checked for cholesterol. I like meat as much as the next guy, but that gravy looked dangerous.
