Back in April, I posted my grease fire experience http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25746&highlight=grease+fire. Yesterday, I picked up the pieces from the sandblaster, and began painting the exterior. My question is: Should I paint the interiors? My gut tells me "no" on the cooking chamber and door – leave it bare and season well. But, I'm less inclined to leave the insides of the fire box (and lid) unpainted. I can't for the life of me recall whether these surfaces were painted when new...any help or recommendations?

Thanks

Paint the exterior only. Season the interior well.

I'd suggest you take a lesson from a master before painting.

Do NOT paint the inside of the firebox. You don't want to eat those fumes. I would blast and paint the smoke chamber and leave the firebox bare and just oil it down well. There really isn't a paint that can withstand the kind of heat that a wood fire kicks off and you will be repainting the firebox forever.......

Slow reader huh? Hell around my house it would take longer to locate the cordless phone (teen age girl mod) than to read it.

I agree, I do not want to eat the fumes. Thanks for the input. I applied three coats of Rustoleum BBQ paint to the exterior yesterday...and boy, is my fingertip numb today. I'm considering trying a final coat (or more) after assembly using the Dave Klose (website) recommendation. "...lighting the pit with a LOW FIRE, say 200 degrees, to help expand the metal so the paint will seat deeply in the pours, and spray or wipe the paint on while the pit is warm. This helps bake it on, so-to-speak. A few coats, with an hour in between, should help. Let the pit cool naturally."

Yeah, I should probably think about recoating the outside of my BC Bandera. There...I thought about it.
