It's not what it cost,it's what comes off it that makes it special.

I'm looking at a couple of tanks tomorrow. I hope something good comes out of it

Once knew a girl in college that was named Lola. She would take a sausage any way you could give it, she wasa big ol' gal, too.

Check with your local Readymix Concrete retailers. The new truck carry 175 gal. tanks. They are only 24 in. in dia. Perfect for a build.

I've got a propane dealer close to my house and I'm going there. The valves have already been removed and IIRC they guy said they had been flushed also.

I learned from this build, don't try to patch the holes where the valves were. Go to the local machine shop and have them rolla piece for your lid. I was trying to do mine low buck as possible, so I segmented my lid.

Why not?

I'd use a washer or some scrap...don't just try to fill the entire hole with weld.

If you weld vertical-downhill, it works pretty good to fill a hole. if you weld flat, all your filler falls down; if you weld vertical-uphill, it takes forever too fill the hole, and the filler is 5x as thick as the base metal.

I tried to fill a 6 in. dia. hole with the same the same thickness metal, however, I had the welder tuned up too high, and shrunk the surrounding steel..

Using Mig or stick? When I fill I tack in piece and back up with aluminum and fill. Seems to keep from blowing bigger holes.

Using stick, my dad told me about backing, forgot about it until you mentioned it.

It's one of those things, Bro. I get six sick days per year, and I've got 30 built up. I think I've got the sweet blue flu tomorrow.

Also I forgot to mention this is one of those " next level " things. Got the big Hawaiian cook in 2 weeks. Maybe needing some more of your help then.

Roy, its like this.......some of us can weld and some of us can't. Its just that way.
My suggestion: find a welder in (spelling?)Eleele, Kaleo, Kalaheo, Poi Pu, Princeville etc. Make friends with him or her.
I'm firmly conviced this can be facillitated by offering beer and bbq. You know what to do brother, turn on the aloha charm. Our food endears us to all.
Then, let them know how they can assist you in your quest for better Q. Essentially, turning them into a keale team member.
OR,
Find out what the UPS shipping costs are to Norco.

That is a thing of beauty., a little paint and a set of wheels and you are good to go. It looks like the cooking chamber is huge, how big is it?

MilitantSquatter
10-08-2007, 08:12 AM
Psst... Porky wants to know how big Tx's "chamber" is.. pass it on.

just kidding... Looks like you may have room for a second removeable shelf for added capacity if you wanted to

What're some of the things I could improve?

I assume you're using stick. AC or DC?

6011? 7018? 7018 is harder to strike, but penetrates a bit less and makes a cleaner bead. Because it's a "cooler" rod, it should dump less heat into the que and should shrink/warp less.

If you have less gap between your pieces, there's less of a gap to get filled with molten puddle, and less shrinkage will occur. If there's no room to shrink...it doesn't shrink.

Tack stuff well, then weld it up.

I just got a MIG this winter, and absolutely love it for anything 1/4" or less. I still tend to go to the stick for burning together really heavy stuff. It's just so much easier to penetrate the base metal and do multi-pass.

Well? I know you have had time to blast and paint that rig... where are the photos of the finished smoker.

Also I owe you one because I have had that damn Lola song stuck in my head all week.
