First props to big "New Daddy" Mista for pointing me to the site
and giving me the confidence to start smoking!

The lil woman in an effort to keep me interested in smoking *so there will be times she doesn't have to cook* bought me some wood from shopperschoice.

well great she bought pecan, cherry and hickory again fab-u-lous! the boxes come and bam there is nothing on the boxes that say what type of wood it is!

I'm a poor broke inner city kid who can ID broken glass bottles but not wood
any help would be appreciated it all looks the same too me just cut different!

sorry had to take the picts with my cell phone cam...any help would be appreciated

and since this is my first post if it's in the wrong spot i apologize

thanks

Hey DI,
I once read a post (may have been on another forum) from a guy who ordered wood and couldn't determine which was which. Turned out the boxes were marked with a single letter. "A" was a box with apple, "P" had pecan, etc...
Any chance your boxes were marked as such?
Other than that I can't tell from your pics

Try cooking with it. You should be able to smell and taste the difference. If you can't, then why even worry about it.

Mista said you guys were great! thanks a bunch

yep the 2 of the boxes where marked with "P" "H" the other wasn't marked so i'm going to go out on a limb and say that was cherry ... it did have a mark but looked like whomever did it was rushing along or lazy or didn't know how to spell

Thanks for responding and answering the question!

my first time using wood chunks again thanks for your help!

My guess, left to right, is cherry, hickory, then pecan on the right.

I can't see the bark very well, so 2 and 3 might be switched.

So which is which DI?

Be a good test of optical wood recognition

I agree with willkat on the order of the wood.

Glad you made it Dark!

Just remember that we LOVE pics and never be afraid to ask a question. We love to help!

Now go to the "Cattle Call" section and introduce yourself properly!

Sounds like the brother have ID'ed the wood. Leaves are the best way but if you have a doubt, tree a green house that sells trees.

I'm guessing Cherry, Pecan, Hickory left to right.

Cherry is on the left, it has the redish/pink destintion
The hickory and pecan is a bit tougher to tell.
Pecan is a very light color wood, but I can't see the bark. I'm guessing pecan is center.
Which leaves hickory in the right - I guess

Bigmista I have been here a while just lurking and trying things

If I had known the mrs was preggies i wouldn't have been calling you so much! I'm sure you had a honeydew list!

Naw it was cool. She's always telling me to leave her alone and go play with my friends anyway.

And when you are done testing all of these woods - try a smoke using all 3 at the same time!

Cherry is obviously on the left. The other two... no idea. I don't use them enough to know for sure.

I don't use them enough to know for sure.

Its the bark that matters for me on these.

MikeG has sent me a ton of hickory off his trees, so I know that bark.

Good thread
