Ordered 1/14/21 and arrived today. Very impressed with the build quality at first look. Paint looks great..it’s charcoal/gun metal. Have to finish removing it from the pallet and install the wheels tonight. Scott was super nice, helpful with all my questions, and overall really easy to work with. Here are a couple quick lunch break shots. Will post more later...

Wow, quite the beauty. The hard part is going to be lighting that first fire to burn her in. Putting smoke to that fine craftsmanship!

You have a buddy to help you move it? Any castors will it be moved to a final resting location?

Still working on that last bit for my IVS. She sits in the garage during the down time.

Yes, I got upgraded castors with it. They're inside still. Going to install them tonight and it should move around easily. It's going on the back patio. I have a cover to test fit.

Finding a cover for it was a challenge and I decided to take a gamble on the Classic Accessories Ravenna 33inch XL. The measurements are technically about 1.5 inches off. It is tight but it does fit.

It's well thought out. Running with the Fireboard2 Drive and Pit viper Guru has been great. Just running the fan off the internal battery of the Fireboard thus far has been nice...less cables/wires always a plus. There is a lot of room in this cooker...more than I need really. I like the additional width for a little more air flow over the Assassin 17, which was pretty much the only other contender for this purchase. I ran B&B briquettes on the first 2 cooks. I think I'm going to run RO All Natural this weekend. The B&B seemed to leave a lot of ash behind. I've really only used it before in my Weber's to grill, so not sure what the difference, but the ash pan filled up faster than I thought it would.

I'm happy to try to answer any questions about this unit. Scott was really nice and even called me after he saw it was delivered just to make sure everything looked good and see if I had any questions.

Do all gravity feeds have a convection plate to even out side to side temps ?

How about radiant heat from the firebox, how does it compare to others ?

I know Assassin has the diffuser that sits on the bottom of the cooker and it has a tube that connects into the grease drain hole. I have heard from some that the bottom rack on the Assassin runs hotter. Deep South does have a diffuser. I did a temp test with multiple probes on each of my racks. Running at 250 and it was settled in I saw difference of only 5-10 degrees when the probes were centered. I did notice it went up about 5 more degrees if I moved the probes closer to the right...closer to the firebox/chute.

That’s about what I noticed as far as temp differences in mine. A little hotter down towards the firebox side, but overall pretty even throughout the cook chamber. The air movement seems pretty decent.

I do wind up dumping the ashes about every 6-8 hours. I have a metal dump bucket sitting right below the firebox door and just use a pair of channel locks, which makes quick work of it.

Sorry, Automatic Temp Controller ............. BBQ Guru, etc

Got it. I also have a Fireboard II, and a pit viper fan combo. It’s a great pair with the Limo. I’d imagine the Guru works well also.

I get a tiny amount of Ash in the bottom of the cook chamber, but it is a small amount. It really doesn’t blow the ash in the ash pan at all. Just takes a bit of ash before it drops. The main issue is it will start to overflow the ash pan if you leave it too long. It’s not a huge ash pan. I have left it alone a couple times with 12 + hours cooks with no issue, it just more ash than what fits in the pan. Just a little more cleanup is all with the ash. So if I am around, I will spend the 20-30 seconds to dump the ash out periodically.

Wow, great looking pit! I took a serious look at these when I was doing my initial research. They are fine units! I can't wait to see the future cooks! Do you think you will mix wood chunks in the chute, or just place some below the grate in the bottom? I have heard good things about both methods.

My IVC just arrived Wednesday, and I got it to the patio and put the cover on it before the rain hit. I am dying to get the burn in done this weekend and get to cooking! I am hoping to get some pics posted here at the site as I dig into it.

Enjoy the new toy, and keep sharing the info!

Can't wait to hear back on how it goes this weekend, and what you think about the alternate method. Will you be using lump or briquettes? I've read that the briquettes tend to work a little better for that method and help to avoid any lodging.

Either way, good luck on the upcoming cooks, and make sure to upload some pron...:biggrin1:

Scott recommended briquettes so that’s what I’m sticking with for now. Either B&B or RO All Natural.

I'm looking at these, as it is getting harder for me in the city to source good wood for my Sniper without paying a fortune. Haven't decided on the Limo or the Limo Jr. What do you think the capacity on this one is? Also, for everyone else that has one, my wife really wants her garage space back, does this automotive paint hold up outside?

I've become interested in gravity feeds on the whole. I found a Masterbuilt 560 at WalMart for $250 and thought I did not have much to lose. Its exceeded my expectation.

So are these quality GF's more for the comp cooks ? Or are they practical backyard smokers ? It seems they're all made in Georgia , what's that about ?

Capacity is plenty for my needs. I just cook for neighbors, friends, and family. No plans to do any competing. Mine will stay outside with a cover on it. I can see the ocean from my backyard, so salt is definitely a concern, but it will be covered when not in use and I don’t foresee any issue.

Probably overkill for the backyard, but it has a small footprint. I really didn’t “need” this but I’ve always wanted to experiment with a quality GF. No regrets so far. No clue as to why most are made in GA.

What is your guess on amount of butts it can hold?

Chester

With the standard 3 rack setup you can get 9 butts easily and 12 fairly tight. There is enough room in the cabinet to have more slides put in and if you go to 4 slides you still have over 5 inches between the racks so that would expand it to 12 easy 16 tightly placed. This is the limo Jr.

Compared to your MB (I have never used a MB, so take that with a grain of salt), these high end gravity feeds are all a little less versatile as they are not made for high temp grilling. They are nicely insulated though so most will use less charcoal. They are probably overkill for the backyard cooker, but they should all last a lifetime if you care for them. I compare them directly with an IVC.

As far as being made in Georgia, that is where the originator started...Stumps. Some are made elsewhere like the Humphreys and TK. But like Texas with offset pits, Georgia became the hotbed for Gravity Feeds.

I'm impressed with the clean smoke from the MB 560. I got my first WSM in 2002. I expected smoke from the 560 to be like the first hour of smoke on a WSM.

Do you think GF's on the whole, make cleaner smoke ? Say, cleaner than an IVC or other charcoal/chunk smokers ?

Once, I heard Stump on BBQ Pitmasters say his GF's made clean smoke because " of the super heated air " . When I heard that, I thought " yeah right " , but maybe there's something to it. There's a lot of heat in the hopper/firebox on this 560.

I'm not interested in a grill, I do my grilling on a Kettle. But I'd like a quality " set and forget " smoker that uses charcoal/chunk. I love my stick burner, but its not always practical.

No cap included. But my BBQ Guru Pit Viper fan and adapter did come with a silicone kill plug.

Well the caster install was interesting. I had 3 friends help me tilt it all the way down on its back. We made an elevated area with towels and padding for it to rest on while we installed. Pretty much muscled it back up.

I did and the foil stuck to the gasket. Had to peel it off. It’s to prevent moisture from the gasket. The smoke that rises up the chute creates a lot of moisture.

I have been using aluminum foil folded up about 5-6 layers thick. No issue with mine. It was thinner at first about 2 sheets thick and it formed a hole in the middle allowing moisture to come through. Discolored the gasket slightly, but no functional loss. If you pinch the gasket several times (work at it a bit) it usually will get the spring back. I see some people using a cutout of the an aluminum tray for this area. You may try that.
