Hey Guys,

While waiting for my new offset smoker to arrive I thought a nice little project for my son and I would be a shelter for the firewood.

I have a great place on the back of garage. However, most things in my backyard get peed on by my dog.

How big of a problem is this going to be once I start cooking with that wood?

Phad.

My stack of wood has been peed on by dogs, crapped on by birds, and had nuts stored in it by squirrels and chipmunks.

Smoke on!

Jeepers! Can't a puppy pee with a little privacy?

So you're saying your dog will "soak an oak, splash an ash and do it on a cherry"? But if he does it on a Christmas tree, Christmas won't be Merry!

Well, you should not put the wood on the ground for other reasons, but getting off the ground would get it out of your dog's reach, unless you got a really big dog.

Termites, carpenter ants, and other wood eating bugs will have easy access on the ground.

Use cinder blocks and treated 2X4's. Bugs don't like treated lumber. Drive a couple of T-posts on each end or buy a firewood rack like this one.

Build your rack and before you put wood on, spray the ground and the rack with 9% fipronil, sold under brand names Taurus A/C or Termidor. It won't harm your dog and it will eliminate ant or termite colonies.

Here's a rack I built from cinder blocks

I have some dead mouse/snake/bug wood in my backyard that gets used :-D

But on a serious note......could you tarp up around the bottom of it?

I don't have a dog but if I did I probably wouldn't care unless dog literally peed on it every single time they went out.

Well, if you've got it on the ground, ya don't want it any where near your house.

I had carpenter ants in my wood pile that was 60 foot from my house, and next thing I know I've got a colony in my house.

Depending upon variety of ants, but the carpenter ants we have here will send out queens to start new colonies. In spring, when the weather conditions are just right, right temp with very little wind, some of the queens will leave a colony and fly off to find a new place to lay eggs and start a new colony.

Mine will be on a frame of 2x6, then deck boards for the floor. So will be 6 inches off the ground. Even higher in the front because the ground slopes pretty steeply away from my garage.

A bare wire of 120V might solve it

I keep my wood off the ground a few inches and have concrete pavers under the stands. How ironic one of my dogs is in the photo about to pee on the wood pile. No harm.

I immediately thought of this scene in Hollywood knights. :biggrin1:

Hopefully your ribs don’t have a little wang in it!
