We have a "barbecue box" that we take with us to the cottage, grilling parties & events, catering work, barbecue competitions or road trips. We were at a campground near Indy for F1 last weekend and I discovered that some things had not been put back in the box after they were last used, like Kosher salt & a lighter and one mitt.

I decided to make a list of its contents (not to be confused with a competition checklist, which I'm also happy to share) so that it wouldn't happen again.

With a tire rim, a grill grate, some charcoal & a quick trip to the grocery store, we were able to create a spur of the moment, delicious dinner for seven (hors d'oeuvres + asparagus rafts, marinated pork tenderloin, applesauce, Texas toast & a salad with some lovely wines) at the KOA. We couldn't have done it without a few tools.

Here's what's in there, in no particular order:
tongs
thermapen
remote thermometer
spare batteries
alcohol wipes
toothpicks
corkscrew/bottle opener
champagne & wine stoppers
knife (at least 1)
fire lighter
fire starter sticks
first aid kit
mitts
rubber gloves
salt
pepper
all-purpose rub (at least 1)
dish towel
Zip-Locs
trash bag
knife sharpener
bourbon
brown sugar
hand cleaner
big fork
plastic cutlery
bear claws
injector
Q-tips
Leatherman-type tool
headlamp
pins
butchers twine
rubber spatula
wooden spoon
basting brushes
grater
cedar plank
cigar punch
matches
rubber bands
fat Sharpie marker
2 clothes pins

Thanks, J! That's a valuable post for sure. I create a list each time we go to a gig/unfamiliar cooking environment. At this point we try not to unpack everything each time, but invariably someone will dig into the supplies on a spur of the moment. Having a checklist like this (or the comp list) is a great way to make sure you are prepared.....

I think I met a friend of yours named Cathy at the BBQ-NYC event last year....she said very nice things.....

EDIT: If you've not checked out Julie's products, you should.....You can find them here: http://mrsdogs.com/

Great stuff!

I'm just using an 18" X 9" X 9" yellow plastic tool box. The biggest thing in there is the jar with my all-purpose rub.

I will start a new post for you, Brett, and post my comp list. Bear in mind that I cook on Big Green Eggs so some of the items are Egg specific.
