View Full Version : GrillGrates on a Pellet Grill?

I have been considering a set of GrillGrates for my Pellet Pro 1190. I bought the searing station so I can get the heat but was wondering if the GrillGrates would give me a larger cooking area. Thoughts from people who have used them? I thought they would give more options for cooking on the pellet grill.
Thanks

I don't have any experience with the Pellet Pro or the searing station, but in general I've found that GrillGrates do help disperse heat generated on a concentrated area to the broader cooking surface on the GG's.

I use them on my 680 which doesn't have a sear option (back then haha) and have had really good success with them on either side.

I have them on my gasser and feel they do a great job of equally spreading the heat.

I use them on my Memphis Pro pellet grill. They've been working well.

Are you using the heat deflector under them? I was planning on using them with my Pellet Pro Sear Daddy searing station. To use it you have to remove the heat deflector. Also what temp do you set the controller at? The food looks great.

It has what is called a Flamezone which allows for more direct heat that has covers if your smoking food, this is with the covers off and controller set to “grill” which reads an ambient temp of 550° to 560° but the grates are much hotter!

The grill grates would be fine directly over your fire pot and would give you killer results!

Thanks, I think I will order a set. How much of your factory grates are exposed when you are using the grillgrates? My grate is 19.5X36 inches and I was thinking about ordering grillgrates that are 19X24 or 30 inches wide. The sear daddy is 19.5X19.5.

I have got really good grill marks using GG's on my PB using the direct flame. I never bothered to check the temp, but i got over 725F using GG's on my tiny little X200.

Well you guys have convinced me to spend more money. I am going to order a set. I think I will start out 24 inch wide and if I feel the need for more I will order later.

Check to see if there are any seconds. Sometimes they have a sale. I use GG on my gasser .. weber kettle ... but haven't had a chance to try them on the 1190 as yet

Waste of money IMO.

First, you don't just want grill lines. You want lots of maillard reaction. Solution for people who use grill grates? Flip them over and use the flat side. Problem solved right? The trouble is you are now using your $75 grill grates as a griddle when you could have just bought a $20-30 griddle.

I mostly use my 12" cast iron skillet and break out my grill grates when I need more room. If I were starting from scratch I would buy a 2 burner griddle. A $30 cast iron griddle will sear perfectly on the grill, last forever, and double as a griddle in your kitchen.

Ordered a set of GrillGrates today at around 10:30 am today and I received a shipping notification at 5:45 pm that they had shipped via FedEx and I should receive them on Saturday. If they get here you can't beat that for service. Also there is a 15% off coupon available if you search for it. Father15. It covered the shipping cost. I can't wait to try them out.

Just ordered another set of commercial grates for the Memphis. I measured wrong last time. I'll move the wrong sized ones to the charcoal grill.

When you say “cover it all”, is that side to side and front to back? If yes, I would highly discourage this. You will restrict airflow and suppress massive amounts of heat in the belly of the cooker. A recipe for poor performance and possible grill damage. Gotta let a grill, especially a pellet grill, breathe :)

No the grates are shorter that the vents, no worries.

Oh good... I was a bit nervous for ole’ Mabel. Would hate to see you put the fire out or hurt her so early in your relationship... lol.
