Its time once again for our big VA cook in Milwaukee. This year we plan to cook for around 1500 vets! This looks to be a huge event, and we could really use some help from the brethren.

Guys, the overhead for this event is pretty big. Meats, breads, drinks, plates, forks, napkins, foil, pans, sauces, rubs, sides, etc. The list is a mile long. Sirporkalot has graciously donated Q salt from Naturiffic for the chicken. Steph at Simply Marvelous has donated Spicy Apple for the butts, and Big Poppa is donating Granny's BBQ Sauce for the ribs. Woodmark from Milwaukee is donating the hickory. That leaves a LOT that we still need. Mainly MONEY!

These cooks have really grown quickly. So quickly, in fact, OIFMarine started a 501(c)(3) for us so that we could more easily solicit donations from larger companies. You can check out our charity here - www.midwestbbqoutreach.com (http://www.midwestbbqoutreach.com) Guys, we could really use some help with funds for this cook. OIFMarine, ChicagoKP, and I are banging on doors and begging for cash all the live long day, but we're not quite where we need to be. Any help would be great appreciated! If we over raise, the money will be used to make this an even better event. If we REALLY over raise, it just gives us a leg up on the next event.

Also, if you have a business or if your employer would like to be a sponsor, please let me know. That's why we did the whole 501 thing! Fully tax deductible and we have a sign sponsor, so your business will get promotion during the event.

You can donate here -

Here's a thread about last year's event.

Thank you all for your continued support of our veterans. We couldn't do all this without the continued support of the brethren.

It will be my pleasure to help you out with this very worthy cause. And I ask that any brethren that can help out with any amount to please consider doing so. We are 90,000+ strong. A couple of bucks from the majority will go a long way.

As someone who is always cautious about donating to charities, can you speak to how the money being raised will be utilized? How much of donations is going towards administrative costs?

There are no administrative costs. Every penny goes to vets. Chris, Kirk and I do this in our free time. The three of us are the charity. The equipment we use, we own. We bought it or it was donated. We have spent thousands out of our own pocket to help make this happen, and we will never take a dime for ourselves. Our entire help staff for the event is 100% volunteer as well. ALL donations go directly to the things we need for the event itself. Food, plates, drinks, forks, reefer truck, ice, etc, but never a dime toward admins.

Outstanding, thanks for the quick response. I'll make a donation this afternoon and try to get all my vet buddies involved as well. Glad you guys are doing things the correct way and I appreciate all your hard work.

Why would you use a donation collection service that is going to siphon off over $1000 of the $7000 goodwill donation money?

I think they only charge 2.9% and .30 per for transaction fees. At least that is what the website says. Previously they had more, but fairly sure this is the new pricing and if so it won't be $1000.

Last year we raised $2120 and after fees got $2045.86. That is only $74.14 in fees.

That is completely reasonable for the platform they provide. However, you are more than welcome to mail us a check if it makes you feel better. Let me know if you need need an address.

Ed

Not sure who that quote is directed at, but I'll field it. Your math is way off, not sure where you got those numbers. On $7000 Go fund me would take about $203 plus .30 cents a transaction IF everyone donated exactly what it says they did. Most people opt to include the processing fees and Gofundme's cut into their donation, so if it says they donated 50, they really donated 55, and paid all the fees on their donation for us.

So, even after taking $203 for themselves, we would still be left with $6797 that we didn't have before, all of that money going to veterans. I'm ok with that. Its the price of doing business. Do you have any idea how much work it is to organize an event like this? One entirely reliant on volunteers and donations? Its a massive undertaking. The only way we could do this with no transaction fees would be by asking everyone to mail us checks. First of all, who the hell is going to do that? Clicking a link, filling in 4 text fields and clicking done is easy, its quick, its right now. Second of all, we are volunteering our time, we all have day jobs, none of us have the time to deal with all the paper work that would be involved in processing $7000 worth of $25 checks. Its just absurd.

And we went back and looked at last year's donation totals just to confirm, after all was said and done, Gofundme took 3.5% total, not the 15% you claim.

If you feel strongly about the fee, please feel free to send us a check. Payable to Midwest BBQ Outreach.

Sent to -

We also have a pay pal link on the website, but they also charge a transaction fee.

It is and you just have to delete that amount, but I will admit they certainly do squeeze/slide it in there forcing you to remove it, putting the onus on the person. Sites like that have to have some type of fee to make donating easy. Everyone sending checks these days is still available, but is a logistical nightmare.

Great to see everyone putting this together.

Norm, that is really awesome of you! And thanks for the personal donation as well!

We have 3 options. The go fund me, The pay pal link on our site (www.midwestbbqoutreach.org) or you can send something in the mail. All three are just fine with us, whatever is the easiest for you. And if you find that it is something you'd like to write off, we can absolutely help with a receipt, tax number, etc. Just let us know. Thank you so much!

And Model Maker, we do not object to cashing the occasional check, its just the thought of having to deal strictly in checks for the whole shebang would get to be quite an ordeal!

I know I'm late to the party, and there is alot of bumping that raises the thread but I didn't read through the whole 5 pages as since you took the time to file 501c3,

If we contribute GoFundMe, there is no possibility of company match.

Is there a way to contribute directly to Midwest BBQ Outreach AND obtain the letter that is supposed to go out to contributions over $50 to confirm the donation?

The reason I ask, there are a number of companies we work for that will match our charitable donations to bonafide 501c3 entities and that letter is sometimes needed for Brethren to submit to their company.

I know I need proof and the cancelled check is no longer enough.
