Looking at my grate last night and the heat is causing the center to rust. I am sure vortex users have the same issue....

Any luck finding a good 304 stainless replacement?

I searched the forum and nothing returned and google gave me a few sites (ie Killa Grilla), but no ratings on construction and rust...

It's not just vortex users. All the plated grates rust eventually. You can get SS grates from Amazon several options. The guys that make SnS make a SS grate too. No experience with any of them.

I have the easy spin grate from Adrenaline BBQ. It’s been a wonderful upgrade to the standard grate and it’s held up well against the high heat coming from a fully loaded SNS basket. No signs of rust or wear. I have only used it once with the vortex though.

Here's one,

And maybe consider this,
https://www.google.com/shopping/product/11978996689780022200?q=weber+gourmet+bbq+system+gr ate&client=firefox-b-1-ab&biw=1366&bih=631&prds=paur:ClkAsKraXwdkc9D2lkch0WunZhvRusBFEOZJMvwB rammT4eRpTO05K_GsIKy_OP4WukqAaosbtPsV-XriRVWsI4aUy07G-dTTMj03MKb0OqGGTsqG7U_1Nj-ORIZAFPVH70scPHLni5oRX-Ykprt6bWzmT5vxA&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi7mOXrhYbdAhVj7oMKHYZaBLkQ8wII6gI

That said, a little steel wool and some oil has worked well for me for decades. Even the SS will discolor if it gets too hot.

It's stainless steel.

Why 304? 430 is a common food grade alloy. In mil salt spray tests it is slightly less corrosion resistant than 304 but not enough to make it an issue.

430 will rust. There's carbon in there. No carbon in 304.

304 is about all I have seen out there in grates, but I welcome 430 just have not found one.

Also seems the 304 claims on amazon and ebay are sometimes fakes...

This is what I'm going to replace mine with when I'm ready, they also make the SnS which is a top notch product. Adrenaline BBQ Co. (https://abcbarbecue.com/product/22-cooking-grate/)

True but irrelevant. I have bought tens of thousands of pounds of both in my business carreer and can confidently say that the difference in this application is negligible.

Zippy12 says that his grate is rusting.
304 stainless will not rust.
430 stainless will rust.
Application makes no difference.
Carbon rusts…that’s what it is.

That's why a magnet will stick to 430 but not 304.

All you have to do is use them, these are the grates from the kettles in my signature.

All they have gotten is scrubbing and some vegetable oil.

Mine rusts out and needs replaced about once a year. I just grabbed 3 grates at target on clearance for 10 bucks a piece.

Been using this grate (https://www.menards.com/main/outdoors/grills-outdoor-cooking/grill-replacement-parts/22-1-2-stainless-steel-grill-cooking-grids-compatible-with-22-5-weber-reg-one-touch-reg/17436/p-1444450219572-c-1461078035989.htm?tid=-5508172128259255524&ipos=23) with a vortex for a few years now, not sure it it's 304 or not but it hasn't rusted. Only $25 too.

Iron rusts, not carbon. There's iron in all steel.

I once heard someone say this about stainless steel:
"a master machinist once told me there's two things to remember about stainless steel - it ain't stainless, and it ain't steel."

To the folks that are having grates rust out, how do you clean them?

304 SS is slightly magnetic. 316 SS is not magnetic. If you check 304 SS with a magnet, you will feel some attraction.

Sigh. I have been out of the country.

You asked about my favorite cartoon. I linked to it as a somewhat subtle way to point out that SGOTI is not necessarily a reliable source of information and to imply that in your case, the caution is relevant.

However, since you are acting like a jerk I will be more direct: You don't have the slightest idea what you are talking about.

430 will rust. There's carbon in there. No carbon in 304.

Actually, both 304 and 430 are considered to be low carbon stainless steels, with carbon limited (roughly) to under 0.1%. The main difference between the two is that 304 includes (expensive) nickel in the alloy, enough that it is nonmagnetic. Given the spec limits for the two alloys, it is entirely possible that a random batch of 304 will have a higher carbon content than a random batch of 430.

There are high-carbon cutlery stainless steels that are very similar to 430 (no nickel) but have 1% or more carbon. Carbon is added to all steels when hardness is desired. High-carbon steels are typically heat-treated to produce a desired level of hardness without the steel becoming unnecessarily brittle. If high carbon made stainless knives rust prone, vendors would not be using it.

That's why a magnet will stick to 430 but not 304.Carbon has nothing to do with rust, as @dgaddis1 has pointed out. Rust is a molecule that combines oxygen with iron. Check your grade school science book for verification.
