Started by whetting the whistle, nothing but top shelf today.:becky: I know you've been there. This stuff is like a liquid time machine.

Yes, I know Meathead says you shouldn't do beer can chicken, but why screw with tradition. It hasn't killed me yet. Striped it naked, and rubbed it down with Loot N Booty Gold Star Rub, and put it in the vortex, setup for infrared cooking.

Threw a few pecan chunks on, and rotated the lid a quarter of a turn every 20 minutes. This process took much longer than expected, but I think it was mostly my fault. I thought one chimney would do. Temps started out good at a little over 400. Held between 375 and 400 for an hour, then started dropping. I should have added more coals, but temps were close, I thought it would pull through. Ended up letting most of my coals burn out, and had to add more, and start with a torch. Ended up taking about 2 and a half hours. I think I should have started with more charcoal. Overall it turned out good. Probably will stick to my pellet grill for whole chickens, but this was interesting, and probably would work great with a little practice.. The Loot N Booty rub was great. Thanks Sako! If you haven't tried BPS Cuckoo Racha Chili Dust, you might like it. They have a similar heat, but use different chili flavors. I'm torn on which I like best.

Nice looking chicken. I need to do that with my vortex. I’ve only cooked whole chickens spatchcock style.

If it's bourbon I will take one, if it is Kentucky bourbon, give me 3.

It's worth doing. Not convinced it is the best use of the vortex, but I wanted to give it a shot.

It's good to see others put their Vortex through its paces with a bird inside.

I cook wings 'round the outside much more frequently than I put a whole bird inside.

This is one cook where I've used a thermo-probe to keep me in the loop as I take the bird to 165F.

Love that Vortex for the crispy skin and moist meat inside.

I prefer to not remove so much skin, as I'm addicted to that stuff after a trip to the high heat sauna.

Hrmph! Never seen 100 proof Williams before. I couldn't do the Jager, though.

Would definitely use probes, if I do this again. It's nearly impossible to check thigh temp, once you have it in the vortex, and it is hot. I didn't remove any skin, but I pull it back, and season underneath, that way the spices don't burn. The skin on the breast tore, and shriveled up a little during cooking. It happens. First time seeing the 100 proof myself, had to give it a try for $13. For the price, it isn't a bad drink. As far as the Yager, I have been hooked for years. It's the perfect compromise between liquor and cough syrup. Clinically proven to turn your frown upside down.

Looking great brother! I'm gonna try the BPS rub for sure. We've got similar palates. :thumb: Finally got a fix of LnB Gold Star last night on wings with the burgers. I find it best on birds cooked in a drum FWIW. Your pellet grill should kick ass so try it on it next.

I knew there would be at least one Yager fan on here. I'm not surprised it was you. LNB will be part of the rotation for sure. I also picked up some Creole Injection Lemon Garlic Butter. Now that I have an idea of the flavor of the rub, I think I will try injecting with it, then add the LNB. I like a little citrus with my chicken.

Never had a sip of Jager, spent 3.5 years over in Europe in the 80's and the homeless would be sleeping on park benches in the morning with a empty bottle of Jager underneath the bench. Figured it wasn't for me, sort of like Mad Dog and a few other quality alcoholic beverages.

Oh man, my memory of 2005 is very spotty thanks to Jager.

Where's the red bull?

No Red Bull today, that combo, can lead to very bad things. Trust me, I know.

Can't lie bro. I still love me some Jager time to time.

Oh and only good memories. :becky: Really.
