I have really enjoyed my OTG 22.5" Kettle over the 12 or so years I have had it. I added the Smokenator a few years back to see if I would enjoy smoking. Well, I suppose it served it purpose as I have smoked Boston butts, whole chickens, wings, legs, and baby back ribs. The big negative about having a nice easy cleaning grill setup to smoke all day is that you can't grill for a Saturday lunch. I went back and forth on smoker size and finally pulled the trigger on the 22.5" Smokey Mountain. Soon I will be able to smoke on a dedicated smoker while my OTG goes back to grilling duty. I am experimenting with different rubs and homemade bbq sauces. This year is going to kick ass!!

You will like your WSM. I have two of them, an 18.5" and a 22.5". They are great.

You will love the WSM. I have 3. A 22.5, 18.5 and a 14.5 for traveling. Very easy to use. Lot's of information available to help if you need. Enjoy.

Good choice on the 22. I've got an 18" and while I love it and it has plenty of capacity (I've fed over 50 people with it one weekend) a larger grate would be nice. A full rack of ribs just barely fits.

Very nice, you get a smoker and the forum gets some funds!

Love my 22 wsm. Can do raised direct similar to a drum, dry or moist indirect, and can grill on it by taking the middle out and placing the grill grate on top of the charcoal ring. Very portable and love it.

You will love it. You might want to consider a 50 gallon Gateway Rib Hanging Kit for around $50. Loads of fun to hang meat, and it is absolutely killer on chicken!

Seeing that makes me feel like I made the best choice for me. My wife and sister-in-law do not eat red meat or pork. So I will need to position ribs, brisket or pork so it will not drip on the chickens. I may have to load the left side of the top rack and the right side of the bottom or something like that.

Is that a perfect fit for the 22.5 WSM? Also, how does it compare to the Weber expandable smoking rack?

Thanks,
Mark

Congrats! Love mine, works great out of the box. I splurged on a Guru for my bday a few years ago and that's the #1 "mod" I'd suggest, but there are tons of ideas on this site.

Absolutely perfect, and very sturdy. I am not sure if the Weber rack is still available.

You could always use your kettle as the designated chicken cooker/smoker. Chicken likes higher temps anyways. Although, If you are cooking a big piece of meat, it will likely be wrapped before the chicken goes on.

I really loved my WSM, and the 22 is a great size. Some complained of fuel usage, but I always had coals leftover, so I never really thought about it. Check out the Mods link in my signature. None of them are required, the WSM is a great smoker right out of the box. The mods just made the WSM better for my style of cooking.

Which Guru did you get?

You guys are welcome. I joined a virtual bullet forum as well, but you guys were more welcoming. That is why I used your affiliate link instead of theirs.

Great, I will add that to my wish list I have started.

I was already planing on buying the hinge, the Cajun Bandit door with Southco Handle, and a second charcoal grate to run cross ways. After seeing your mods, I may be adding that charcoal eye bolt mod to my list as well.

I'm thinking of doing the same!

I had a 18.5" but sold it to a friend of mine.

Love my Shirley but for small cooks at the house...not so much.

I really loved the basket mod. So easy to pick it up, shake it out, dump the ashes, put it back in place, load it up, and hit it with the torch.

If you want to cook without the water pan you can also make your own charcoal ring, giving you twice the fuel capacity. This is the one I made for my 18, mine vs the stock ring:
