Is this grill worth the effort of rehabbing it?

Needs:
Ash Catcher 35.00
One-Touch Cleaning System Kit for Grills 22.00
Charcoal Grate 6.99
Grill Grate 14.99
cleaning and rust removal (me!)
80.00 total from amazon

Brand new is like 129-149, depending on the store. So the question is how much of the rehab turns you off and how much do you want to save for a grill?

I would do it.

In my nearly 6 decades on the planet I have never come across good chit for the taking on the curb. I must be traveling in the wrong neighborhoods.

I say do it. This grill is not ready for the scrap pile. There are many great meals waiting to be produced by this grill, and it is waiting on you for the opportunity to do it.

if you can wait i would pick up a cheap junker off cl and use the parts for this one. Nice score.

I just got the one-touch kit from HD for $14.99 shipping free.
Its always good to rehab if you got a good base to start with.

You could always use/give away the lid for uds and get a coal grate and ash catcher and use it as a fire pit.

Agreed. You should be able to find something on CL for $30-ish that at least has usable ash sweeps and grates. The ash bucket might be a bit more difficult to find on a CL dumpster dive because it's the newer style. Or could downgrade to the one touch silver style ash pan instead.

I will keep her!

I will take all I can off both lid and bowl.
Remove whats left of the ash sweep.
clean the porcelain interior.
Install new ash sweep (15.00 at home depot)
Use the cooking grate a new unopened jumbo joe (walmart EOS 35.00)
try and use coal grate from jumbo joe (10.00 for new one)
rig a large coffee can as the ash dump

Air flow is the only thing I cant really control until I get the proper ash dump

25.00 in so far until I need the grate for the jumbo joe... then get a stainless steel grate for this one

Air flow shouldn't be any different than the base kettle's.

A lot of people use a galvanized metal bucket to catch the ashes. I cook on the old style daisy wheel kettles and use a scoop made out of an old plastic bottle to remove most of the ashes.

Yea I see the One-Touch Cleaning System also controls the air flow.

I am thinking a revere ware pot that has lost its handle might work as an ash catch

You can get a brand new silver for 99 dollars just put a cheap bucket under it and throw that hub cap away use the curbside one you found for a fire pit this winter you can make a great fire pit with the old bowl

Just so long as the pot is as wide as the vents, it should work. You can set something on the wire triangle to raise it up closer to the vents. Found a picture of a bucket.

Smaller bucket set on bricks will bring it closer but that picture with the bucket will work fine

On my newest kettle, a 1993, it's in a cart and I use a dish network satellite dish as a ash catcher.

You can make a stand out of an old gasser base, store display cart, basicly anything that can stand the weather and has an opening big enough to fit a 22.5" kettle. Support can be anything that will hook under the lip of the bottom. The one pictured is on it's 3rd cart.

That's a great idea for that dish, because that is about all it is good for. I recently (two different occasions) was watching tv and the weather got pretty bad, but the reception on my dish was fine. Then the rain shifted to a drizzle, no wind, and the picture went all scrambled for several minutes. Stupid dish!! Sorry off topic, but can't pass up a good chance to vent.
