dumped a weber chimney full of unlit charcoal in my little GF last night. held a small torch to the bottom of the coals for 2 minutes. it had a sweet odor as i was hitting it with the torch. definitely no bad odors although there was some thick smoke for a few minutes. within 10 minutes the smoke from the top of the GF chute was clear. closed it up and 30 minutes later the smoke from the exhaust stack was clear and i was running about 215. with RO lump the smoke wasn't clear until around 300 and with my beloved HEB Grand Champion charcoal it was not clear until 275. its only been 1 use but i am impressed. ran the cooker at 275 ish for a couple of hours with my first tri-tip. the stack ran absolutely clear for 5 hours before i shut the intake. i did not have to dump the ashes but there were more than with lump but a lot less than my normal HEB charcoal. now i just need target to lower the price to 5.98 so i can buy more. definitely recommend you give it a try but not at $20 per bag.

Ya im loving the stuff. I grabbed 8 bags but hope to make it back there for more. Tried a target closer to my house that brickseek said was $6 only to see it marked at $10. Best briqs ive used to date.

i haven't yet. been putting those big hickory chunks (more like small splits) we found at Lowe's on clearance for $2 or $3 per bag. they sure burn up quick though and you never see much smoke out of the stack. i'll probably mix some chunks in the chute on my next cook. still experimenting.

no. going to keep it at least until i get the farking carport/garage built. the guy that's going to help me build it asked that it get below 90 before we start. the Abe's will fit a bunch and if it is raining the SF is not a good option. i know...it can get wet but i am not interested in getting soaked while i cook. the Abe's needs a paint job but other than that it has held up really well for 4 years. i think the builder did a crappy job prepping the surface for paint as the paint has been coming off in big sheets/chunks. it was really cheap though.:tsk:

Finally cleaned out the ash pan. Used exactly 4 pounds of charcoal and 2 mini splits in the firebox here's what's left in the ash pan. With my other charcoal I had to dump the ash pan mid cook. It's a very small ash pan.
