or does your chewing gum loose it's flavor on the bed post overnight?

Actually... am curious regards aluminum foil.

Shiny side up or down?

Or does it matter?

My experience, it doesn't matter. My buddy swears one side is better. I just pull out the amount I need, tear it off, then fold in half. Sometimes the wind helps me decide which side is out.

Both.

I make a sandwich; foil, meat, foil. The under side gets dull and the shiny goes on the top

Mmmm foil sand wedge

Some people say dull side out if you want to absorb heat, shiny side out if you want to reflect heat. I'm sure in grilling and cooking the difference is minimal.

There is two sides?

To foil or not to foil- that is the question. I knew there were 2 sides- just did not think that a bit of shiny or dull would make a whit of difference. If I were more motivated, this would call for extensive testing, notes and comparisons...nahhh- pass.

Shiny side toward the food.

Reynolds Aluminum says no difference. One side is shiny due to the milling process. But what do they know?

+1 shiny side at the food. Backyard BBQ-R YouTube channel lists shiny side in as one of his tips.

Whatever side lands on the food when I wrap. :-P

Theoretically, the shiny side is smoother and should stick less.

In practice, I can't imagine a situation where this could make any noticeable difference.

In the immortal words of Bill Murray in the original Meatballs, "IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER!"

If it did, would there not have been some mention of this on the product box decades ago? Oh, I know...it is a devious desire by Reynolds, etc for us to never know how to use the foil.
To me , this is a classic example of an "old wives tale". To those who think otherwise, do whatever floats you boat.

Wait, there was a Meatballs remake?

Makes no difference. I have worked at an aluminum foil factory.
The shiny side is the side that faces the roller in the extruder.
It is purely a side effect of the manufacturing process.

Damn.... all these years.... thinking it mattered.
Will have to unlearn lots of routines.

I do think KevinJ has it right.

Anyone else notice he doesn't say what he's using it for? He could be signaling an airplane for help, in which case, shiny side up.
For cooking, it doesn't matter, when wrapping, part of the foil faces upwards, part sideways, and the rest, down.

Did anyone else go check their rolls of foil to see if there was a shiny side?

(Slowly raises hand). :icon_blush:
