I have/had a mini-wsm, PBC, MES, and a GMG Davy Crockett. This past weekend I went out and purchased my first stick burner. I went with an Old Country Pits Pecos. While at Academy I went over several pits. I looked at the welds (I am not a welder and know nothing about welding), I also looked at door fitment and checked for doors that had very little gaps. After picking what I thought was the best one I got it home and did some seasoning.

After seasoning I cooked up some chicken thighs. They were nice and tasty. Sorry no pictures. I was to busy learning the pit. My next cook was a Boston Butt. I decided to use a marinade on this cook instead of a rub. The butt turned out very flavorful and the family enjoyed it. The only picture I remembered to get was before foiling.

I look forward to many more cooks on this thing and learning how to use a stick burner.

Oh Ya.! Pecos are Nice Pits for the $. You may like the different temp zones but if not make your self a convection plate or go easy way with 2 cookie sheets and a waterpan....,

They ship smokers for $80-$150 but you get what you get and they have been delivered with no lift gate service.....

Awesome smoker. The more you play with it the more you'll really like managing the fire, etc. Just be sure to have plenty of beer on hand

Very nice pit. You will enjoy the world of stickburners, experience some frustration, but eat some of the best bbq you have ever had.

Congrats!

Can't seem to find any place in Michigan (Metro Detroit area) that sells reasonably priced stick burners. Obviously, Lowe's and Home Depot carry the cheap, crappy ones. We have a Bass Pro Shop in Auburn Hills and they carry Horizon, but man, those things are big. And expensive. I get that they are top-of-the-line, 1/4" thick steel and all of that, but I'm more interested in a Pecos, like the one on this thread, or a Bayou Classic that were being sold at some Costco locations this spring.

Ok Joe Longhorns at Lowes n Walmart are comparable to Pecos. I prefer the Pecos but the Longhorn will work. Or get the Ok Joe New Bandera Vertical for $376 at Walmart/Lowes

I want a Pecos too but also don't have any local places that sell them near Milwaukee. I'm leery of ordering one online from Academy. I want to be able to look them over and pick out the best one like the OP did.

Save up for a Jambo or a Shirley and forget about all the crappy stick burners and you will have a smoker that will last a lifetime
