I have 2 inch wide 3 inch tall pipe nipples on my uds cover. I'm looking for ideas to create a damper out of them, I have a welder so that's not an issue. Ive seen the teardrop ones online, not too crazy about those. Any other ideas or what you guys have done? Thanks

Not sure I'd bother. As you are cooking, you will want exhaust WFO - so you don't need an adjustable damper, you just need something to block them off so you can shut it down after a cook. If you could find a couple of round magnets, they'd work dandy- as would a couple of de-headed bean cans. (not a great look- but would work). If you had gone with threaded nipples, you could use threaded caps.

You can get creative with flippers or slides but whatever you decide- make sure it has some way (friction/spring) to keep it where you have it set. If flops around whenever you remove the lid, it would be frustrating and make you say bad words.

good luck- take pics- show us what you come up with.

I used Soup cans.

If they are threaded, the best solution would be pipe caps, like Nuco59 said. It's hard to tell, it looks like you have black tape on them in the pic.

Here's what I use on my 85 gallon UDS. Drafts well. Keeps the rain out too. Screw on end caps to shut it down.

Sure. Out of pocket right now, but should be home tomorrow evening.

I went with keeping the lid as lite as possible. Aluminum flashing, cut with scissors and one short sheet metal screw each. And a cheap handle. I did this years ago as a test. Worked so well I never changed them.

Yea looks like tape from pic but no tape. I bought a 6" threaded on both ends and had them cut it in half

Do you need to partially close the exhausts, or just want to close them off at shut down? A large washer with a magnet glued on it works well for shutting things down and stores on the side while cooking.

Sorry for the lighting. I would apologize for it looking so bad....but it's called an 'ugly' drum smoker for a reason, right? :-D

I use this:
https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/steel-rain-cap-for-2-in-to-2-1-16-in-outlet-pipes?cm_vc=-10005

You can tighten the flapper nut so it will stay open.

My uds has a weber kettle lit, and I run it full open.

That looks like something I'd like to do , could you share how you made that?
