View Full Version : Adding grate space to the WSCG

The second biggest drawback (the first was $$$) to replacing the Weber Genesis S-330 with the WSCG Grilling center was grate space. Losing, I think, about 60 sq. in was going to hurt. Weber has the following grate extender, but I was not sure I liked having to balance the legs on the lower grate and having to remove the whole thing to get to the food on the lower grate.

So, while I was barnstorming ideas, the help at BBQ Outfitters said wait a second, and went to grab one of these:

I like how the base fits all around the lid ring and is very stable. I also like that you can remove the grate itself, leaving the base in place, and have good access to the food on the lower grate.

I put the grate in place, put my pizza stone on top, and then dropped a measuring tape down through the vent. There was 6" of space from the top of the stone to the bottom of the vent / inside top of the dome. I am thinking this might do good for a pizza. Thinking of giving it a try this weekend.

Here are some pictures:

Makes you think what other bge parts will fit

I am still waiting for a BigJoetisserie to be available so I can see how it fits...

that's a modest mod after seeing what you did to the wsm. i'm guessing there will be more to come.

Not sure on that Paul. I needed more space for our typical meals. I'd like to be able to spin a chicken. Want to try pizza again. May eventually try one of them Slow n Seers, but other than that, I can't really think of anything else I want to do to it. It's pretty complete...

Oh, I might get some heat resistant tiles and put on top of the table. Hell of a glare when cooking during the day.

Two things I want / need to find out:

1. Someone posted about buying an adapter and refilling the 16 oz propane bottles. Need to read up on that.

2. I thought I ready about hooking a Guru up to one of these, but I don't see anywhere it would connect. I am a little leery of drilling into porcelain, but I do know it's possible. Probably not needed, as I can do over night smokes on the cabinet, but curious.

Thoey - the wscg has a plugged hole in the bowl on the right side (toward the table) If you push the plug out you can fit one of the guru adapters and mount the fan there. I use my flameboss with this setup and it works great!

Thanks! I'll look for that tomorrow before I do some wings.

I look forward to you trying new things on this. Gives me ideas for mine. I've used used this and it fits really well https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IU7HJNU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you get the Guru, can you do pictures/videos? I'm on the edge on getting one for the summit

The BGE rack looks enticing, will have to check it out. That being said. The Weber extender works great. Took measurements of height last year, but forget exact numbers. Very stable, plenty of room to access food below without removing the rack and tons of room up top. YMMV.

Thanks CedarB. I missed your reply, but went looking for a picture and saw it. The Weber one does look like it holds more than I thought it would.

I'd assume that would fit a big joe too? I like the fact you can remove it and sit it somewhere while accessing the bottom grate.

It's just a 24" ring, so if that's the size of a Big Joe, it should work.

Yep, did similar with my WSM. If you are crafty, you can build your own.
