i tried searching some, but is there a thread that talks about these as a rule of thumb? i have a brinkmann Cimarron that i would maybe get to be a more even temperature. i did not even realize any types of mods were being done. i like the cooker, but if i can make it better...... it is kinda sad i haven't used it much since i made my uds.

Horizon Smokers has what you need. I think that these guys also built the Cimarron and the accessories for the classic 16 inch fit the Cimarron.

Check out the grates and charcoal basket also. Bear in mind, they were very slow to fill my order.

the horizon one looks good. i do have some access to some metal here and there. would be nice to know the hole sizes and spacing that are being used. understand it could be different on different smokers, but a starting point would be nice.thanks for the good info from you guys.

I would start with like 5/16 holes on the firebox side do 2 rows inch and a half to 2 inches apart then step up to three eights to 2 rows 1.5-2 inches apart then go to 7/16 or half-inch for 2 rows then 3/4" for the last row and see how it runs. then you can take a piece of flat stock flat bar And cover a roll of holes see how it runs move it back-and-forth and tune your convection plate.
