We'll, after cutting up a Maple thinking it was Hickory, I knew it was time to brush up on my tree identification skills...my uncle had this tree that he said was hickory that was standing partly dead, and partly green. Am I crazy or is this blackjack oak?!?

That is definitely not a hickory leaf.

Oak for sure, black, white, red? But definitely an oak indigenous to your area.

Yep. That's what I thought too. The smooth bark towards the top of trees always throws me off. And my uncle of all people!? He should know better!

The black oaks in Alabama get pretty scraggly up in the tops, limbs every which way. I can identify them in person pretty good. Laying on the ground in pieces is a little tricky, unless I put them there.

The leaf says oak. The bark says I'm not sure. Based on the split it looks close to post oak or white oak. Regardless it is oak. Burn it!

Thanks guys! Two butts are on to cook through the night. Then 12 racks of loin backs in the morning. Should have some happy people at church!

Oaky, oaky........if the lobes of the leaves are pointy, it's a red variety...if the lobes are rounded it a white variety.

Think it's red oak also from here. There is quit a bit of variations in red oak leaves off the same tree.So look them up, this may help you some.
