I have been cooking on a EOS for many years though recently decided to build my first UDS. This thing holds temps like a champ and for the amount of $ invested is pretty tough to beat. The only thing I am still trying to dial in is the amount of wood to add to the charcoal. Anyway here are some pictures:

I love my UDS. You can build them cheap, but they work like a champ.

I like to use a split in the middle of the basket placed vertically and then the coals piled up around it, and then 2-3 other chunks of wood placed throughout the coals.

Looks good to me! I wasn't very convinced when I built mine either, but it's a darn good cooker for $150! As far as charcoal/wood mix, I don't know that the way I do it is right or wrong, but it works for me. This is a typical load.
