I have been a fan of kids learning the ropes in cooking, no matter what age or the stage, be it the kitchen, or the outdoors. This is time well spent showing them, teaching them, nurturing them. This is my 7 year old grand daughter Emily at the wheel... Poke Chops! And she knows her way AROUND the Vortex! She told me when she was 6 years old, that the most important tools in BBQ are the pinchers and the stabbers... The tongs and the thermometer... can't argue with that! :)

It's a great feeling having the little ones envolved. My daughter enjoys grilling as well. Now when we go shopping she likes to go over and look at the brskets lol.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! This li'l girl is sumptin! On one of her first cooks as she was learning the Thermapen (the stabber), she states, "Pop-Pop, I have to go potty. Don't stab anything 'till I get back!"

That's awesome! Our County Fair has a pork chop competition for the kids. Aside from awards, they all get their own smokey joe.

My daughter was livid that I didn't enter her into it this year. So the next year will be practice!

Briskets are down the road aways... but she'll get there. For the long cooks, and as her patience grows (I hope), I'll start her out on pork butts first.

Emily has a birthday coming up... and I have been thinking about a Smokey Joe for her. What a hoot that would be!

And then when she "needs" more lump, you might as well get some too!

This is awesome and I completely agree. I did start my 2 year old with his own kettle though.
