I found a beat up piece of scaffolding on the road and was wondering if the holes are too big for a charcoal basket. I could take it off the frame and use I for the sides on a charcoal grate or use the frame and build a square basket.

I think it would be all right but if there is enough of it go the other direction on the bottom piece .

Seems to me like it would be too big for lump charcoal, even doubled up. Those little chunks of lit coals go along way in keeping heat.

My biggest concern would be if that steel has been treated. If it has zinc playing under that paint, you want to avoiding using it on something that will be in direct contact with fire. I have not heard good things about vaporized zinc and the human nervous system, and would not want to find out what zinc smoked food can do to somebody. My two cents is to pass on it if you are not sure.

The zinc is something I am aware of. I have a water tank I was going to use but it is galvanized and 5 of the 8 55 gallon drums turned out to be galvanized after we cleaned them up so I am finding low/ no heat uses like charcoal and wind protection my garage is 100 feet from the house and there is no room for charcoal and tool storage in the house.

In my more ignorant days, I used some cheap galvanized lathing material from to make a basket. Didn't know any better until I wised up and found some expanded steel.

I used it a few times, Not sure if using it made me any dumber. Maybe it did and I'm too dumb to know it :)

I don't want to risk it. I was a genius till I spent many years working with lead that and teenagers has left me kinda dumb.
