Found this in the back of the garage and thought it would work as my charcoal basket if I put some legs on it. It is 11" wide and 12" tall. I thought I could make a diffuser to sit on top of it.
Also can I use an aluminum cake pan as an ash catcher.

I don't think you'd have enough air flow through that

Drill a lot more holes and it should work OK.

I would love it more like 18" wide. (more holes as mentioned, as well)
It will work, but you won't get as long or perhaps as hot of a fire.
I don't use an ash catcher, maybe I should.

Definitely needs to be wider

No 12 hour cooks with that basket, which might well suit your needs.

I have it and it's free but I don't think it's the best plan.

If its aluminum it won't last long.

Stainless steel but I think I will have to build one.

Slightly off topic, but, I have some high temp grommets from McMaster that I could send you for your build. They would be used for a probe port. Has a nice look, but not a necessity. Here are the specs: High Temperature MIL Spec. Grommet, Fits 1/2" Diameter Hole and 1/16" Thick Panel
PM me if you want a couple.
