Anyone get a inexpensive 1/2 NPT, 3" dial thermometer off ebay or other site for under 20 bucks that works good? Looking to put a new one in my UDS with out dropping 60.00 into a tel-tru.

save yourself the hassle and buy the tel-tru

These work pretty good, I like the glow-in-the-dark

I've used my UDS for almost 3 years- never mounted a permanent thermo.

I DID install a small lamp nipple in about 1" below my main grate so it would accept a 12" Turkey Thermometer. I do have to pull it out when I drop or retrieve my coal basket but it's hardly a bother. I take it out and store it indoors anyway when I shut 'er down. The tip hits dead in the center of the drum- so there's no " wall temp + x = center". And you can get a "really nice one" for less than $20.00. and I'm still using my original thermo.

If you are dead set on the 1/2" npt dial style, then go RiverCountry.

Also gotta say this one has done mighty fine for me.

My review on Amazon for 3" River Country (RC-T3W): Large 3-1/4" diameter face, easy readability, 5F increments, accurate out of the box. Back of face sits 3/4" above the surface it's mounted to. Uses a 1/2" male national pipe thread 3/4" long and includes a nut and washer so you'll need a 13/16" hole in your BBQ or smoker to mount. Probe extends 1-3/4" from end of thread, so 2-1/2" total. There's calibration screw on the back if you ever need to adjust it.
