View Full Version : Yoder YS480 - Any thoughts / Experience??

Found a used YS480 pellet smoker.
I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on it or experience with it.
Thinking of getting one to add to the collection but if it doesn't smoke well (I like heavier smoke profile) but know pellets don't do as well as true wood burners.
Just thinking of having it as a spare and something to use every now and again.

New they're $1250+ shipping. What would be a "Smokin" deal on a used one that's not that old (year or so). looks clean and in good shape.

Thoughts?

If a good deal I would definitely get it. Yoder pellet smokers put out more smoke flavor than most because of their large burn pot. They are very equivalent to a clean burning smoke flavor from a stick burner. Always a consistent nice thin blue smoke below 350 degrees.

This one has a few options so I'd say it was $1350-1500 new.

If I could get for $800-900, would y'all say grab it???

Grab it if you don't like it you could probably sell it for what you paid for it. I wish I could find a deal like that, I'm looking for a decent PG.

can't wait to hear your thoughts. I will likely be grabbing the ys640 or ys1500 in the Spring. I have a trip to Europe to pay for first then I will likely grab it.

On the Yoder site, it says they start at $3,645. Is that about what I'm looking at? Are there any upgrades/add-ons I should consider?

KevinJ

For the heck of it I did a search and found one locally, I was shocked you hardly ever see any kind of decent smoker listed. Guy says it's 2 years old wants $850 and it's very clean looks pretty rough to me.
I'm sure it's just surface rust and looks like paint pealing but dang when I purchase something I take care of it.

If he had kept it sprayed down with Pam or some form of oil it would not have done that I don't believe. It may look a little rough but if it still cooks well and you could negotiate on the price it might be a decent deal.

I'm still waiting to hear on the one I made an offer on. It looks a little newer than that one.

There are three versions. There is the 480, the 640, and the 1500. And the 480 starts at about $1250. The 640 starts at somewhere in the 2000s I believe maybe a little less. The 1500 is the big boy and starts at over 3000 I believe.

I'll probably go check it out sometime next week.

The 640 starts at $1449 but that's without a comp cart and start at $2045 with cart.

Swole, based on many of your comments made both on this forum, and on Yellow Bullet, I don't think you will be able to detect ANY smoke flavor from a pellet cooker. But I do think you will enjoy the cooker you now have on order, especially when you load it up with an extra 30lbs of hickory bark... for a little "light smoke flavor!" :)

Lol

If i get this, it'll just be an addition to the collection. Something to use when I want to try a different taste profile.

I would say maybe 600.... But, yoder in my humble opinion and tons or research are probably the best or about the best pellet machine there is. I had a treager and loved it. Rebuilt twice in 12 years of hard use. My friend has a Yoder..... Never touched it in 10 years of moderate use. Flavor is great.

We made a deal on it and I'm supposed to pick it up later today but it's not as good as that price. It was manufactured in November 2012 so I think it's a newer model. I wonder if there were any upgrades from 2012 till now.

I think I will actually enjoy it for chicken and maybe ribs and use other smokers for brisket and pork butts that require more smoke.

If I don't enjoy it I might just gift to my brother-in-law because he would really enjoy having something like this.

Just picked it up :)
It is in great shape.
The only thing that is wrong is one of the welds on the hopper top hinge broke away from the hopper. Just looks like it pulled right through the metal that the hopper is made from. The old owner said that it was due to one of the hinges kind of seizing up and when he continue to rotate it it popped away from the hopper.

He even gave me a used Maverick that he says still works just perfectly because he bought a different unit with a guru. Also got a 40 pound bag of lumberjack pellets brand-new as well. :)

Score!!!!

He was a great guy also..Retired law enforcement. (Back the Blue)

Keep us postedI've been communicating with a Brethren who has owned several Yoders and he told me to walk away. Oh well I've a wedding to go to in Oct and I'll be close to a BBQ Store that sells Backwoods and 270 Smokers I plan on coming home with an Insulated Cabinet, still want a Pellet Grill but I'll get one later unless something falls into my lap.

Looking forward to your impressions on the YS480 looks like it was really taken care of.

Congrats on the new addition. Not paying shipping sure helps as well as the lower price for buying not new. I just bought one new a few months ago and am very happy with it. It does eat a lot of pellets!

A few observations from my experience so far: A real tank that puts out great food. You get steady thin blue smoke for low and slow smokes for sure. At higher temps, not so much, but still get some smoke flavor (can always supplement with A-Mazn pellet smoker).

The temps reported by Maverick and the custom controller typically vary a good bit esp. during mini-heat up / down cycles, but on average temps are consistent within 10 degrees once initial heat levels are established. Took getting used to. Really need to open lid at a bare minimum. Causes mini heat up / down cycles, though not sure if it matters much.

If you want to do high direct heat / good searing: The new two piece heat diffuser plate for direct heat / flames for high direct heat / searing works really well (has a 12 x 12 cut-out you can pull out vs removing entire diffuser plate).
Searing plates are defn. a good addition as well. Learning subtleties for reverse searing takes practice, but really pays off.

Oh, and get a side port to run Maverick wires through. Real convenient and makes for tighter lid fit.

Happy cooking!

Thank you Sir!! Yes, I think I got a "smokin" deal for sure. 2013 model w/ searing grates, a free Maverick, and a 40 lb. bag of lumberjack "blend" pellets for only $825!!! :becky:

Yes, next time I'll have more time and will start on lower temps for more smoke taste and then finish hotter.

Yes, when I was doing research and almost bought a new YS640, I saw the new heat shield with the door for searing. I may order one someday. I need to order their cover first though.

I do need to mod it for probe ports. What the best way to do that?

And yes, opening the door to sprits or just look / check on things does cause drastic heat changes.

Thanks for the reply.

Well due to having to rush them tonight - had a guest coming over. She enjoyed them :), they turned out fairly decent but not perfect. I had a bit too much salt in my rub. Never had a chance to wrap to get them really tender. But they still tasted good.

First cook on my Yoder YS480 was a success, I'd say. I have a lot to learn about it and how it cooks though.

Yes, I love this beer but I usually don't buy the "Light". I bought it by mistake, but It's pretty good too!! Goes down EASY :)

More to come... I bought some chicken and a butt to do later this week.

Now I just need to find someone local to buy some more pellets with my wood preference...These were just a "blend", but I don't know what mix it is. I need something with a heavier smoke profile (Hickory, Oak, Mesquite).

I hope I can learn to do good pork butts and brisket on it and be fairly satisfied.

Either way I have my offset and my egg for now that I can use as well.

Hope I can still manage to keep the cabinet on order but as I explained last night in my text, 10 weeks of lost income hurt pretty bad .

This, plus I would guess that the cooker is still structurally sound and it would look like new after a quick sand and repaint.

Yoders are made of such thick steel that it would take a minor miracle to rust through.

Ribs looked tasty.....
When I had my Treager I tried most every pellet out there. I liked a mix for pork. Hickory, Apple, and Cherry or maple if out of cherry. Equal parts of each. Briskets, I used Oak and Apple mix. Chix, cherry with a tad hickory. And Fish was a straight maple. In my mixes I would mix the pellets up pretty well before pouring in the hopper. And then mix them alittle more before firing the grill.....

Well I did some Chicken... Two different rubs. Still have a good bit to learn about this thing. Seems it's hotter toward the stack and got less smoke there too. The ones in the middle had better smoke and finished later too.

I started out at 170 for 30-40 mins to get some smoke on them. Then went up to 225 ish. It over shot a few times when I opened it to sprits.

Decent meal though... I ate 3 breast and almost all the stove top stuffing...LOL

Thank you on the probe port info...I'll only need one then

WOW those look great!!!!!!!!!!! Dang!!!

Congrats....

I'm doing some chicken breast right now.... Started out on 165 for about 30-40 mins. to get some smoke on them...Upped to 225 a bit ago.. We'll see if they turn out good.

About to place an order with ATBBQ and get some different pellets (Mesquite, Oak, and Hickory) and some rubs....Ordering my cover , probe port, and a smoke tube to try as well.

If you haven't ordered the probe port yet, I'm pretty sure these are the exact same thing: Amazon.com: Stainless Steel PG16 Waterproof Connector Glands for 11-15mm Cables: Home Improvement

I just bought a used 640 as well, and I need to do the same upgrade.

On the 640? I bought a 2013 model on a comp cart for $1300. It needs some touchups on the paint because of some rust.

Swole, on our YS640 we have to move the "adjustable damper," located underneath the deflector plate, a little past half-way towards the fire pot (scooting it to the left half of the cooker) in order to get the two sides of the cooking chamber balanced for temperature.

On the YS480 you could probably accomplish the same thing with a couple of fire bricks.

I will try to find some and test that... Thx

i love my yoder 480.

i stumbled on a great deal for a used on a comp cart at $800 along with a box of spare parts including a new panel/touch pad. it's needs a little paint TLC cosmetically but makes outstanding food.

Please share some of your secrets with me on the 480.
Where on the cooking surface do you usually put your food for the best smoke flavor?
What type and brand of pellets have you found gives the best flavor and spoke penetration?
Do you find that cooking on the lower grate or the higher grate works better for smoke penetration and even heat?

I'm looking for any guidance you can share with me please. Thank you.

Due to my injury (mainly lost income) and deciding to keep my order for my LSG IVC, I've decided I need to sell the Yoder YS 480. I just need to free up that money for the LSG.

I've only cooked on it 3 times and it works perfect. Has direct grilling grates and everything pictured in this thread.

Also comes with almost 70 lbs of pellets.
