I've been offered some wood from a Hackberry tree, but I don't know if it would be useful for a smoking wood. Anyone ever use this stuff, or have any info on it?

It's fine, it's a fruit tree with edible fruit .
Think of mild oak.

I like hackberry too. Reminds me of a "light" hickory.

I like Hackberry...but...
I wasn't able to split it with an ax...Very heavy/dense wood...
