How does this compare to royal oak?

I haven't heard many good things about this stuff. Foreign material, doesn't burn long, lots of ash, etc. Price is compelling but if someone has firsthand knowledge let me know.

I have read that there are two types of Cowboy made in Mexico and USA. This is the USA stuff that has received favorable reviews. We will see.

The packaging for these bags is different from before. The previous bags I have bought were 14 pounds and chunks seemed to vary widely...lots of fine dust, some rocks, wire sometimes, and every now and then a big ass chunk of lump. But I bought one of these new bags and the quality seems much better...nice evenly sized chunks and so far no rocks.

Of note, I think this is the same company that puts out Stubbs charcoal, which I know lots of people like.

There are two style cowboy lump:

The regular cowboy made in Mexico which I've been very happy (not the scrap wood that they were known for that was made in the US)

The Southern Style Oak and Hickory which Palmtree picked up that is made in the US and is also great. The Southern Style is almost identical to Royal Oak.

I didn't used to be a fan of cowboy brand and I stopped using it for the reasons you stated...then I heard they had really changed things up so I tried it again last year and was very happy with the product, no more mill scraps etc.

Thanks for the update on the lump. I tried it once several years ago and was not impressed. Just this week I went to Ace and past by pallets of the stuff on sale and bought their last 5 bags of Wicked Good lump for $20 a bag. The manage orders it special for me.I am going back to get a bag of Cowboys to try.

I use cowboy lump when it goes on sale. I've used it for 4 years now since they stopped using scraps. I have never had a bad bag of charcoal from Cowboy, no foreign matter, no scraps, all nice large pieces of lump, with almost no dust.

I prefer The regular cowboy made in Mexico, and on occasion I have used the Southern Style (often called "Premium Lump"), I am very happy with both products. I get a clean 14 hour burn with very little ash from an 8lb bag of Cowboy when on sale.

Lump Charcoal is almost pure carbon in nature, it is very fragile, and when bags are mistreated by the idiots in the warehouse, you get a lot broken pieces and a lot of dust. You can't blame that on the manufacturer when it is the probably the fault of the retailer who mistreated the bags in storage or when moving them to display.

I had a similar issue with Lowes concerning Frontier charcoal when I ordered online. I refused the 10 bags they pulled because i could feel and hear all of the broken pieces. I simply pull my own bags from the center of the pallet and I have no issues.

As was mentioned that's more of a distribution issue than a brand issue, I've seen that with just about every brand of lump available at big stores, cowboy, frontier, Royal oak.

IMO Cowboy has stepped their game up over the last 2 years and Royal Oak has gone down in quality.

Cowboy is just bit denser and burns a little bit longer than Royal Oak. I also haven't run into any debris or non charcoal material in the Cowboy bags in a very long time.

Royal Oak red bag stuff is lighter wood so it burns quick. Also you see pieces in there that look like scrap wood. I have also noticed much more debris and non charcoal material in the bags. Ranging from rocks, pebbles, to insulation type of material.

Personally if I had the choice between Royal Oak and Cowboy, I would choose Cowboy.
