So, last night I went to a new store that had shoulders on sale for $.79lb. While I was there I grabbed some top round for jerky, which my kids take to school and sports.

My 15 y/o son who is in the autism spectrum and usually has his head in a book or sits mesmerized by TV walks over, looks at the top round and says

"Hey, can you teach me how to make jerky? Kids like the jerky and come and hang out with me at lunch. They think you're cool because you can do that. I like that."

Tonight we have class one - trimming and measuring cure/spices. Wednesday's class - since they are on break - smoking your meat 101.

I'm a happy camper. Just thought I'd share that with everyone.

That makes me so happy! My son is 5 months old but I hope that he one day comes to me and wants to hang out and cook. My wife doesn't cook much, so I hope he'll take interest and wanna hang out with me in the kitchen!

Am there, doing that. Our 13 y/o daughter is severely autistic (non-verbal). She has a limited diet (texture issue). Recently she's taken an interest in our cooking. Loves to help chop veggies especially onions. And drops anything she's doing when she smells bacon cooking (who doesn't). We find immense satisfaction when she helps us in the kitchen! You take your blessings where you find them!

Keep after it Ed!

Thanks for the smile! I don't have kids, Who knows if I'll ever have one. Not in our plans but never maybe one day. I'm the cook of the house. I don't take pride in much else. Cooking its the only creative hobby I have. That will be the skill I pass down to my kid some day.

I bet that's one of the best feelings in the world. The story sure put a smile on my face! Best of luck to ya brother!

This is excellent! Some the I've seen again and again is that when a child learns to make even one food item that they like, they realize that they can actually have some control over their environment instead of just reacting to whatever silly stuff the adults do. ;)

Hey, just wanted to give you my congratulations. I'm sure you've had some really hard times, and more hard times to come, but it's these little victories that make it all worth it. Congrats my friend, from one dad to another.
