A friends neighbour (Canadian spelling of the word) has been building these for a few years now and I happen to be at a Christmas craft sale yesterday and he was selling them there. Pretty sweet unit...and pretty pricey. $1,400.

They even did a news article on the local tv station about him.

Unique conversation piece, but for $1400.00 I'd buy a Humphrey's.....

1400 CAD is like 1000 or so USD.... still spendy for essentially a drum smoker.
Cool concept and greatlook though. Love seeing new product ideas.

Neat looking unit, but I'm seeing lots of galvanized too, I think!

I've read a bit on these. It seems that the temp fluctuations from cooking and cooling off cause the staves to lose their seal. This would cause a ton of air leaks if the staves actually start to move apart and create large gaps.
I'm no expert, and can't even remember which bbq forum I was reading this info on. But it seems like a good possibility that there will be some movement and warping from normal cooking use.
I personally wouldn't want any part of that headache.

I say if he can sell them and the customers are happy, more power to him!

Need to keep full of water when not in use to keep the staves tight.

I also did some reading on this and seriously considered it as part of some work my family is doing at wineries... thought it would be a good tie in. They require maintenance and don't have a ton of room.
