So, I can get my hands on about as many 55 gallon used oil drums as a guy would ever need. I'm curious though, besides using them for trash burn barrels, would there ever be a point that you could get one clean enough to make a UDS out of it?

I've done it. Burn the hell out of it.

Both of ours had motor oil inside. Made for one heck of a burn out!!!

Burn a couple of broken down pallets of wood in it... nice and hot.

I add air holes in mine first, then burn out, gets a little hotter but yeah, burn it out.

buy a new one for $70

I'm guessing oil is better than a liner to burn out?

Mine were transmission fluid barrels.

Sorry I hadn't gotten back to this yet! I'm happy to hear the responses! A resounding yes always makes a guy happy! Now, just to figure out how to make one!

There's more info on this site than you can possibly process on how to make a UDS. Just use the search bar at the bottom. As an aside....my first drum had diesel oil in it. I burned about 6 pallets in total in it....after drilling the vent holes at the bottom. Got her hotter than hell. When she cooled, I scrubbed, sanded....and scrubbed some more. After a good cleaning...she was ready for seasoning and cooking.

Oh, that comment was kind of tongue-in-cheek :)
A UDS...or 3, will pair nicely w/ the 18" WSM!

After a couple dozen cooks you'll look inside and will how NO IDEA if it was a brand new drum or and old used drum.... only by the outside.
