ok...we've got a den meeting coming up, and one of the activities will be doing some outdoor cooking. Looking for suggestions.

I've got some chicken parts (legs and thighs), and was considering chicken with potatoes, and carrots, and/or some other root veggies. Thoughts on cooking time?

Also considering picking up a whole bird and cooking it with some spuds and veggies...saw a recipe for a 3lb chook, at 350 for 4 hours...seems excessive, no?

Also thinking of pasta with meatballs, or at least a meat sauce.

Any and all ideas are welcome :thumb:

Keep in mind, I'm looking to avoid what seems to be the standard scout fare (open a can of biscuits...)--not only because we're dealing with food allergies, but also because I'd much rather cook a good meal from scratch any day of the week than to open a bunch of cans. I think it's a better lesson for the boys.

Thanks!

We did a brisket chili for our last cookout and it worked great. Measured out the spices ahead of time, the kids cut the onions, peppers, brisket, etc. came out great

Put those chicken parts in the bottom of the DO, dice an onion and throw in, maybe some celery. Add a couple cups of dry rice, a sliced up smoked sausage, salt pepper, etc... Cover with 4 cups of chicken broth and a bag of frozen peas (optional) and let her rip.

Kind of like a poor mans paella.

Harbormaster has a good recipe, the only thing I would change, would be to put the veggies on the bottom and everything else on top. It protects the chicken from the hot CI. If you are thinking about a dessert, google "dump cake in a camp DO". Yall will have a good time and a great meal. :thumb:

Here's a good recipe for cobbler. The reason I like this is that opposed to just putting yellow cake mix on top of the fruit, the crust rises and covers the fruit.
