View Full Version : Reverse Flow Build

Hey all, I'm helping my son build a reverse flow smoker. He picked up this air compressor off craigslist for $50. Its really old, the tag says 1950, 80 gallon and 1/4" thick. This is our first R/F build

I had this rolling table/workbench given to me years ago. I used it for a couple projects and its been sitting in the corner of my shop cluttered up with crap ever since. We needed legs and casters for the smoker so we decided this would be a good time to re-purpose it. It had a plywood top which we removed before I took this pic

The tag on the carriage reads Douglas Aircraft Co. "Pallet Storage-Rocket". So the name of his grill is now "The Rocket". We removed the angle iron frame and test fit the tank, turns out that the original rocket and our Rocket must be about the same size because it fit like a glove

Spent a couple hours with a wire wheel and a die grinder cleaning up the outside, indexed the tank and welded a piece of flat stock on to use as a guide to cut the cook chamber doors.

A friend had a small pile of 1/4" tread plate that he donated to the cause. We are using it for the firebox and warming box. These pics are of the firebox

That's a good father and son project.

Thanks Garrett. Its been a blast so far, we're having a good time with it and already talking about the next one we want to build. His birthday is today and his mom and I got him three 3" Tel-Tru gauges and a Maverick 733 for his smoker.

How far should the baffle plate be from the cooking grate? I've read online anywhere from 2" to 8". Ours is going to be about 4" at the firebox end and 5" at the far end. Is there a rule of thumb?

Thanks for all the replies guys, this has really been a fun project, we're already talking about the next one we want to build. :-D Last weekend was my son's 21st birthday, so we didn't get a lot done on the smoker. He did have a little captain in him....

I was the D.D. so I made sure he got home safe, then on Saturday we took our concealed pistol class. We did manage to get a little bit done on the Rocket on Sunday. We finished the firebox door, installed the hinges, seal and handle.

10-30-2015, 09:36 PM
Thanks everybody!
Deer season has slowed our progress a little bit, but we are chipping away at her. We finished the air intakes and welded the FB to the CC. Tonight we made the final fit to the frame and welded them together.

Great job so far!

Can't wait to see the finished product.

11-02-2015, 12:28 AM
You and your son are doing a great job... To answer the baffle plate question... We generally keep ours 2 to 3 inches below the 1st grate..

11-03-2015, 01:11 AM
Looks Great, love the stand. On our baffle plates we are also 2"-3" from the bottom of the bottom grate.

11-06-2015, 10:22 PM
Thanks guys!

We decided to add supports to the frame at the firebox end to help with the added weight of the warming box we are building for it.

We got the rails welded in and cut out the baffle plate, we're planning to weld it in this weekend and work on the warming box

Wow, this is awesome.....like others have said. i really want to learn how to weld. I've asked for a MIG welder for Christmas, and I've asked a few "pro's" I know to teach me:)

11-10-2015, 01:00 PM
We finished welding the baffle plate in and got a good start on the warming box. We still have a lot of work to do but we can see the light at the end of tunnel.

11-10-2015, 02:35 PM
good build you guys have going on so far!

11-24-2015, 09:24 AM
Thanks guys!

We're getting there slowly but surely, we finished up the WB and welded it in place & built the grates. We need to fit the CC doors and build the charcoal basket and we'll be ready to breathe a little life into her.
