I have hit a conundrum! Last night I planned on drilling a couple holes in our camping charcoal grill. It was some no name brand that was given to us by the person that sold us our camper. The wife pulled it out of the camper and I was doing a little work on my Focus and she said, "Oh no!" One of the legs had rusted off. Not enough metal to reattach it either, great.

The wife says, well I guess we need to get a Smokey Joe. :clap2:

The problem I have is that the Silver and Gold don't have the same basic features. I need the ability to keep the lid closed during transport (Gold), but I want super hot charcoal, which I have read the Gold doesn't get quite as hot as the silver. The wife thinks the Jumbo is too big for camper use (I want it though). Is the Go-Anywhere charcoal grill a good alternative? I am afraid of the lower lid height. Of those 4 what is the best all around?

Thanks!

My hottest grill is the Jumbo Joe with a charcoal basket made for it. You can click on the Jaime build in my sig...but besides the charcoal basket which helps with getting air to the coals I put a handle on the bottom vent that you can't see in this pic. It get's wicked hot though.

If you get the small joe gold the charcoal basket will still help it get much hotter than going stock without.

The Go-Anywhere is a nice grill, however it's cooking area is real small. The charcoal grate is very close to the cooking grate, so searing steaks is ez. I've had one since 1975 or so.

I have a CL Smokey Joe Gold that I modded with a CL Smokey Joe Silver. I like it, too.
Still - the cooking area is a bit small.

If you have the room, I would suggest the SJ Jumbo because of the larger top grate.

Search Target and get the Jumbo Joe cheaper than the Smokey Joe. They are on clearance at most places now.

I do prefer the Jumbo to the Smokey but I have several of each.

Well, that's my plan. I like the larger grilling surface so we are going to see if we can find a Jumbo on clearance. We need something for this weekend, so we may end up with whatever is out there and just deal with it.

Also think everyone should have a mini WSM for camping.

How do you transport yours? I've thought about taking mine, but the height is awkward and the fact that its 3 pieces (plus grates, saucer, etc.) makes it tough.

I saw a SJ bag at a flea market and almost got it but wasn't sure how useful it would be.

I'd go with the Jumbo Joe. Has a good sized area and is still easy to transport.

Ended up with a Jumbo Joe. Nothing is on clearance around these parts, 4 stops was cutting into my time, and I'm not cheap.

Good and you can make a mini with that later.

You won't find a tamale pot for the jumbo joe but you will find a fantastic stainless steel stock pot that fits great.

For turning this thing into a little smoker, how about a roll of 20"X50' Aluminum flashing? Or even 20"X25'? I saw someone use galvanized steel flashing (which I myself won't use) but I can find these 2 sizes of flashing fairly easily and they are not over the top expensive.
