New member here, and since I don't see where to search for a thread topic, I'll post this and maybe get two replies in one.

Anyone know where I can get a good, heavy duty charcoal 'basket', one that is solid on bottom with an expanded metal charcoal grate above the floor, and large enough to take Humphrey's maze snakes?

Thanks,
duckjockey

I would think you could find a local metal shop to fab what ever you would like especially if you feed them, it could get you a good price as well.

I have made several from expanded metal you can get at Lowe's or Home Depot. 4 cuts and bend the sides up and around each other. If you need it raised off the bottom of the cooker you can use long bolts to make legs.

These are supposed to be good but a little pricey. I have not ever used them or seen their work though.

The Yoke-up boxes are good. And worth the price if you can't weld yourself. Made my a guy who is not only a stand-up guy, but a serious BBQ competitor who knows what a firebox needs to be

x3 on the Yoke-up XXL. Great guy and a quality basket. I really like mine. Joe

I made mine from the 24" x 24" expanded metal available at Home Depot (and I imagine Lowes). There is a diagram of a cutting plan floating around the net somewhere that you can use to make your own. I used stainless steel bolts on mine. I did not, however, make any legs for it as I added rails inside my firebox to accommodate the basket.

I went a tad (like a quarter inch on each side) larger on the bottom, making the sides a tad shorter in the process. It turns out that this slightly expanded size juuuuuuusssst barely fits in the Char-Griller firebox so, double and triple check your measurements.

Hmmm...hang on a sec, I may have that diagram floating around my desktop....yup, got it. Here ya go. Hope this helps.

I've made several expanded metal charcoal rings / baskets for my WSM & offsets.
I always use heavy gloves & other protection.
The edges are razor sharp till trimmed or filed !
Last time I simply dropped my almost completed basket , sliced through my pants & made 6 in long deep cut:shock:
3 hours in ER , $250 deductible later if I need another I'm buying one!
