Simply awesome, both the cook and the continuing commitment to our vets. Good on all y'all!

And a special shout out to Paul and Tyler Shirley for donating a pit for y'all to use on these cooks.

One of these days I'd love to come up and help out for a cook just to feel the love first hand.

Rich, aka Mad Hunky, braved the rain and brought down his lang to help with the chicken. He also donated the rub for it.

Heres brian accepting honors from the mvf on behalf of the que team. I felt slightly embarrassed as it was us who was honoring them.

We missed ya Paul!
Well the weather was supposed to be heavy storms at night ending early morning. But that did not happen. After midnight we hand almost constant drizzle, then early morning ( before dawn) the storms came. Canopies blown over, just about everything getting wet. They even moved all the stand down ( except the cook) inside cramped quarters. Around 10am the storms went away and we still had some wind. Dave luckily brought some HD canopies as those were the only ones not to blow over. No where was dry. But the MVF was able to bring some of the supplies for the vets back out side, Clothes, shoes, bath supplies etc.
It is great being able to do this for the Vets. But also great for us to be able to get together and apply our hobby together helping others. I final got some sleep and am still beat. Here is a few shots I was able to get.
None of the off set smokers seemed to care much about the down pours. I know we went thru a lot of wood!

Great pics guys!!

We had an awesome time cooking and BS'n all night in the rain.
This event is just a great time for everyone. These Vets are so appreciative of the cooking we do for them and to see their faces lite up makes the long hours worth it.

The pits were running solid for about 17+ hours and as Tom said the rain didn't slow us/them down any. Well some of us that is :pound:

Lil Joe was even up and going for a good part of the night :thumb:

I work for AT&T. We have something called Employee Resource Groups (ERG's) that are groups of people with different ethnic backgrounds, beliefs, etc. The one I belong to is a Veterans ERG, made up of ex-military, families of military members, or just those that want to support and give back to military members. One of the thoughts in the back of my mind when I ordered that monster LSG smoker was that if they ever had a benefit such as those you support, I would be well equipped to help out. Still nothing yet, but that gives me time to learn to control her.

The first thing lil joe wanted to do when he woke in the morning was check on the fire. Wont be but a few more years until Dave can finally get some sleep on these overnighters.

thats great Terry!

Arrange one yourself!!

Or find a group that you can help! That's what I did. Took a little doing but now that we are off and running we have enough opportunities to help I have to be careful not to take on too much and burn the guys out

Thanks BB. Being in San Antonio, are sure there are opportunities that we can assist with and not have to organize it ourselves. I just joined the ERG, so I want to get situated in it before I start pushing to volunteer. Hopefully by next year I can get us doing something.

what made it a lot easier for me was to find a group that was already holding a picnic event, so all I had to do was to cook the meat for them, everything else was already in place, kitchen staff, sides, etc etc

made it a lot easier. Took a lot of calling around but it was worth it

I see some true Pitmasters who can produce great BBQ under any conditions. Great pictures and food. I know the Vets appreciated it.

Oh and Dave, You've got a future Pitmaster on your hands with Lil' Joe!

It is an honor to be even remotely associated with great people that do great things for the people that did great things to keep this a free country.

Thank you to all the Vets and this group for giving a special day to them

You are all top notch!

That's what I'll be looking for. Something that is already established but they just need some help smoking the meats. Don't think I want to get into all the politics and paperwork.

Oh he didn't want to sleep either, he was checking every pit and drum to make sure they were running and "hot" ( his words) constantly. Every time we would open a fire box door he was there, if he didn't beat you to it. If Dave keeps bring him to all the over nighters, I think Joe will be addicted very soon.

I would suggest you get ServSafe food handler certified if you are not.

When you approach charities to help, they dont know who you are, it helps if you can provide them some documentation that you have a solid knowledge of proper food handling and preparation procedures.
