Are grill grates a "must have" for pellet grills? If you had to choose between a set of grill grates, temp gauge or cover which would you choose?

For some people. I have them, but much prefer using my Weber Performer for any grilling.

Given the options you posted, absolutely the Grill Grates! I have them for my pellet grill and like them a lot. I still use the Weber for things like burgers but chicken is awesome on the pellet grill and you can get a true sear with your grill running at 450*. I'm not really in to the whole sear mark thing as I actually use mine upside down like a skillet most of the time. I prefer an over all sear instead of just the lines. Try some pork steaks or a good filet seared on all sides and then finish at 400* for about 5 minutes sometime. Yum! Not quite as good as using a really good seasoned cast iron skillet but close.

Temp gauge like a Maverick 732 or 733 would be a close 2nd if your grill does not have a built in meet probe as I can't imagine cooking anything low & slow without one.

I have them for my pellet smoker. I have not used them and they are still brand new in over 2 years. I use the Weber for high heat grilling. I only use the pellet smoker for long term low and slow cooking.

Definitely Grill Grates! Great investment for any grill, but especially a pellet grill.

I use them for grilling on my Weber. They are excellent. They give you distinct grill marks and flare up protection. However, I can't see any advantage to using them on a smoker. I have never used a pellet grill, but my understanding is that the heat is indirect. If that is the case, what would you gain by using them?

Can you get your pellet cooker hot enough? I love mine on the Hasty but don't think you would see much value on a pellet cooker.

What sort of temp gauge are you talking about?

I really like my grill grates, but the necessity depends on the pellet cooker. With my Memphis Pro I don't really need them, but with pellet cooker that don't get as hot there is but need.

But, if being kept outdoors, any pellet cooker should have a cover.

I have a Memphis Pro and love using the grill grates on it. If I had to choose between the grates and a cover for the cooker, I'd go with the cover first. Then get cooking accessories later.

Add the Grill Grates to your Christmas wish list.

I love my GrillGrates. That being said, if the pit is outside and you want it to last, you need a cover. You also need some sort of instant read thermometer, especially if you cook things like chicken that must exceed a certain temp or something like pork that you don't want to over cook. Third would be the grates.

If / when you decide to get the GrillGrates, use SHARE15 in the promo code box and it should give you 10% off.

Not seeing the value on a Kamodo with ceramic diverters

On most pellet cookers, you remove the diffuser or diverter when using GrillGrates. That makes the fire direct. They are a definite need on the Yoder if you want good grilled steak and chicken. Personally, I use my PKG or Weber Kettle for those, but if space is a concern I would get them...

Also, because the fire is direct once the diverter is removed, you will get great results on a Yoder Pellet Grill with the temp set at 375-400 degrees.

So basically this is more cast iron searing than open flame / direct searing. With my diverter removed, I've just never had an issue searing over direct heat on the BGE cast iron grate.

I'm a gadget guy, so ordinarily I'd be intrigued.
