Thanks!

Pelican is cheaper and performance difference is marginal according to this test of coolers in the link below. Unless you need to hold your briskets for 10 or 11 days instead of 9 :biggrin1:

Fly pelican, fly (what movie?)...

Keep an eye on dry weight as you compare them. I think I remember reading that the pelicans are much heavier but I'm not sure.

Yeti will make sure you get one made in the USA if you request it.... from their website:
"Our coolers are manufactured in the USA at facilities located in Iowa and Wisconsin as well as at a facility located in the Philippines. Want a YETI made in the USA? Call us at 512-394-9384 and we’ll make it happen."

I have a yeti 65; I'm pretty sure my kid is going to get it when he moves out of our house. He's 14months old right now. It is nice on extended camping trips having cold beer after 4+ days.

Something that someone in the market for a Yeti/Pelican/Grizzly might consider is from icekool.net They are a Canadian company that was trying to get into the premium cooler business, but failed. They are going out of business and their inventory that is left is 75% off. Their cubes and catering line are the only things left, but worth the look. Shipping is $30/unit

I have 2 of their catering line that I just received and they are well built. They are on day 3 of the ice test. So far they are performing really well. Lets see if it holds up to 7day as advertised for their catering line. It is 9 days of ice for their cube line.

If I'm reading correctly, you have a 90 day trial period and you can return it no questions asked if you don't like it. Sounds like they are pretty confident in the quality. For the price and return policy, I thought I would give them a try. I went ahead and reserved 3. If they are of good quality I will keep them all. If they are junk I will send them back. I'm hoping that they are top notch. With them offering a 7 year warranty, I have a feeling that they are probably well built. We shall see my friend.

YETI all the way...I say this only because of the Cabela's credit card bonus points. Using a Cabela's visa for work expenses helps justify the cost. Picked up a yeti 50 and small soft side for minimal out of pocket. Cold temp retention in the hard shell 50 has been impressive with 3 plus days of opening/closing for drinks on the patio. The soft side has held temp 1 to 2 days with full sun on the boat or truck. It will not leak water. Anybody on the fence should bring a case of brewskis over to our place to test the retention time. LOL! I'm sure we can figure out (with in a day or two) if the yeti cooler is right for you!!!

I apologize for bump the old topic, but I have some interesting observations that I would like to share, maybe this will help someone in the future because once I was on the lookout for useful advice.
One thing that should mentioned and pardon me if has already been.

Ice can be made and stored at number of diff temps. When you stop into the Valero or whatever to get your ice, it behooves the store to cool it using less energy. So you might buy ice at 29 degrees F or at 25. This makes a huge difference in a 20lb bag. Some people have the misconception ice must exist at 32F. Also, if you don't smack your ice and leave it in shape it lasts longer but does not immediately pull heat from you sodas or fish. Putting salt on ice that is bought at 30F is not going to be nearly as effective. This is of course why some people on camping trips take some frozen CO2 along and have various methods for decreasing the temp of the ice that is in contact with the goods.

In addition, everyone's cooler, even the same brand, is a bit different. The slightest bit of a crack because the top does not seal well, or compressed insulation that you cannot even see, makes a significant difference given time.
I cant bring myself to buy a $400 cooler, but if i was going to, it would be an engle. Just the fact they come up in conversations with little to no advertising (that i have seen) is a testament to their quality. After watching the video, it looks like the coleman held ice just as well as the engle and the yeti didnt even come close. Not saying yeti is bad, but for the money, you can get better. Me, ill stick to my colemans and igloos. I had a coleman extreeme hold ice for 7 days in the direct sunlight in july which is plenty for me! We used a small cooler to keep food/drinks an the coleman got opened once a day to refill the small cooler. Here's how I look at it:

Yeti/engle: extremely durable. heavy! Good ice retention. Probably last 10 years. Cost $400

Coleman/igloo: not as durable. Much lighter, same (or close) ice retention, probably last 2 years. Cost $40

https://bestoutdooritems.com/pelican-vs-yeti/

So for half the cost over a 10 year period, i can get a cooler that holds ice just as well, weighs less, and im not heartbroken if it gets stolen, lost, or breaks!

Ice retention/cooler performance has more to do with cooler prep and temperature regulation than price. For extended trips, chill your cooler ahead of time, chill or freeze the items you are placing in the cooler ahead of time and keep the lid tightly closed as much as possible and just about any quality cooler will keep ice 5+ days! On extended trips, i fill the cooler with ice and the items i cant freeze that i plan to take 2 days before the trip, the day of the trip, i drain the water, add the frozen items, and refill te cooler with ice. This gives me 5-6 days of ice retention on a coleman extreme and another 1-2 days of cold items (little to no ice) in our texas summers.

This may have already been said, but all those super efficient coolers are really heavy just empty, let alone by the time you fill them with ice, cans, and meat and can be really difficult to move around.

If you need to keep things cold for an extended amount of time the hassle is worth it but for just day tailgating and stuff, any of the cheaper coolers work just as well and are easier to plug around.

I've owned both Pelican and Yeti hard coolers and a Yeti soft sided Hopper 2 30. The hopper gets used a lot more frequently due to how light it is, but I wouldnt rely on it for a 7 day camping trip.

The pelican coolers are really nice though, work great and I prefer the latch system on those over Yeti, personally.

Spending the equivalent of a car payment on a cooler- when did that become a thing? My granddad would give me a Gibbs slap to the back of the head if I ever thought of doing such. Cheapo styrofoam or Coleman cooler blows out the back of a pickup, I don't cry. Someone steals it, I don't consider violence.

But maybe I'm "underthinking" it.

Hence my vote for RTIC. Right now a 65 is $190 with their sale. For something that will last I don’t mind spending that. Double that for less from yeti, now that’s a different story.

I got tired of lugging my 45 qt Yeti at the Texas Bashes. Gave to my daughter. I now have a 30 something dollar deep Coleman on wheels. Still have and use my Yeti Roadie. The Yeti stuff is great but they sure could use some wheels. Plus, unless you are going to be gone for days without the ability to get more ice, they are just not necessary. I know they are a status thing but as you get older, status kind if goes way down on importance.

I still have a big hard sided cooler, but have found that I LOVE my soft sided coolers MUCH more. I have a few Polar Bear H2O 48 can models that I won't be without. I dig the closed cell insulation and the water resistant shell for "Oh crap it's raining" situations. Light, easy to pack into the car and put away. I haven't used the big boy in a long time.

It all depends on needs, and what car you are paying for  I bought a yeti hopper, but that was less than my car note. I use the heck out of it, and it does a fantastic job. Though, the design is crap. I'm always scraping my wrist to get in there-but I can load it full at my house, drive 8 hours, and still have cold stuffs when I get to the hotel.

I've bought suitcases that cost more than a month of my car, and I curse them every time I use them (weekly) and like the cooler more. Now that I bourbonly think about that, should I use a cooler as a suitcase?

Have a Pelican. Can’t remember the size 35?? I’ll look. Very nice. Heavy empty, not budging when full. Last couple years I have carried an RTIC soft and a Sam’s 30$ special. Both 20qt. I think. I stack them. If I had a do over, I would’ve skipped the Pelican. Think I paid 187$ free shipping via Amazon. I’ve never seen them that cheap again. May be off a few on Pelican price- not much though.

I have some Yeti products, all gifts. No coolers though.

Saw these as I was following the wife down the aisles. Picked up one to test on the boat that weekend. It was a bit lighter than my Yeti of same size, and it did as well as the Yeti (nothing scientific). So......I went back and bought the remaining 3 they had for competitions.

That's how I feel, too. We use our coolers for competitions and rarely need to keep them chilled for more than two days, maybe three for a double header. I can get 22 lbs of ice for $2 at a local grocery store, so it's hard to justify spending an extra $200 -$300 for a cooler.

I may get flamed for this, but the Yeti/NRA thing is a little childish in my opinion. To me, it sounded like the NRA probably wasn't even using the discounts provided to them and Yeti just told them that they were cleaning house of old discount programs (kind of like Verizon did when they started auditing their corporate discount programs their customers were signed up to). From there, it seemed like the NRA got a little "upset" and they immediately thought to ruin a wildy successful companies name over a discount program by blowing it out of proportion. Kind of childish to me.

I would find it hard to believe a company like Yeti who is marketed largely to the outdoor industry and based in Texas wouldn't support the second amendment.

With that said I am a proud gun owner, support the second amendment, and the NRA. But, to me I thought it made them look bad. Also, I have huge respect for Yeti, their marketing, and the brand they built. They designed a lifestyle around a cooler and made people want to spend $350+ for a piece of white plastic filled with foam. Pretty impressive...

I think there was an error for a brief time last evening on RTIC site. I saw on FB there was a 25% off soft coolers for a back to school sale. I thought I would give it a try. I ordered a RTIC 65 and the code actually worked. Took it to $179 (plus tax). I got my order in, it gave me an immediate email confirmation and it shipped within 30mins. Take a look at "Bison" coolers which used to be "Brute". They are made in the USA and the owner is local from North Richland Hills in Texas. not sure this helps but he is an Aggie. I have a couple different sizes and a soft pack cooler and they are a great value and hold ice as well as other similar priced coolers.

I have a yeti hopper 30 and a tundra 65...they both work well, and hold ice for days when camping, but are overpriced imo. Capacity is limited in them until you get to the really big ones and they r very pricey. A really good soft cooler at good prices is AO coolers...they won’t keep ice for 6-7 days like a yeti, but they are a great compromise. I have several of those for the side by side and for in the truck.

I have a 95 qt pelican that I bought on sale from Costco for around $250ish. I take it on 2-3 week hunts in Idaho and might have to refill it with ice once. I also won a 45 qt Bison from a closest to the pin competition at a golf tournament that I also love. The big thing to remember is a Yeti 65 (or any other size) is not a true 65 qt cooler while most other brands are close to the advertised size.
