I just got in my charcoal basket but I can't add wood from the fire box door I have to open up the top. I was wondering if this is ok or I should cut the height down on the door side. Also should I set it on the grill grate or just take the grate out?

No need to ever add wood in the middle of a charcoal cook. What smoker you have?

I use a little charcoal to start it then only wood through the whole cook

I use home made lump to start, if it's the small stick burner, then wood"cherry only" till I feell I've pumped enough smoke then back to lump with small splits here and there.

If I'm running the big stick burner, it's wood all the way. I run a second fire outside the fire box and shovel in the coals from it, along with my smoking wood.

So why have a Charcoal basket? All you need is a grate raised 3-4" off of floor.
Adding wood from top is fine - some Fireboxes only have doors on top.

I must be missing something? Got a picture of the problem?

Will go get a pic of the pit and see...

Edit...

I looked and still a bit confused. Was the charcoal basket made to use the firebox as strictly a direct grilling add on?

Second edit...

I see now that Klose make a large charcoal basket with mazes in it. Most when using this would use wood chunks mixed in with the charcoal and just let it burn. Don't see why I would really want one but it gives you the option of running charcoal that way. I don't see it warming my pit up enough to be able to run very long.

yes you can open the lid

thats how you would normally add wood anyway, not though the side vent door

that door is to clean out the ashes

Nothing wrong with using charcoal and wood. I do it all the time for temp control. I'm not a PRO like a lot of people,so I just do what works, for me. And I can put out some great Q. I have limited access to wood,so sometimes I use Brinkmann chunks to get my flavor. SO, charcoal and wood,it is. I am sure a lot of other people do the same.

Heating an offset with briquettes sounds expensive. How much charcoal do you use on a typical cook.

Pretty sure Blu was referring to the charcoal basket not the cooker.

I agree with ButtBurner; IMO there nothing wrong with starting with charcoal and adding splits from the top.

I would do it the same way. With wood cost the way it is around me, I always start with a small bed of charcoal and then throw 2-3 splits on after sitting on the firebox for a bit. Just warm your splits, open the top and throw them on as needed.

Also, don't let them sit on the fire box for too long as you will then have 2 fires going
