I was wondering if any of you guys have had any luck finding wood suppliers on Long Island, or maybe a day trip away? Most of the regular firewood guys arent exactly scrupulous with the pedigree of their logs. I also wouldn't mind getting something other than oak.

Welcome to the Brethren!
What are you looking for? Do you have a stick burner or are you just looking for small chunks?
Long Island has a number of orchards and they normally let you take the trimmings for free. Call your local tree guy and ask them for a heads up when they cut a fruit or nut wood tree.

I've thought of going that route. I'm not thrilled with it being "cooking wood" though. In other parts of the country you can get 1/2 cords of actual hickory, or oak, etc. I've also heard that the kiln dried burns very fast.
