What is the correct placement of the exhaust on smoker. Grate level?

I'm not a pro but I have built a few pits and my preference is to hold it about 2" above the bottom grate it seems to give me the most consistent results regardless of using the the bottom grate or the top grate.

Agree with the above, I cut an exhaust level with the cooking grate on a Tejas I had, allowed me to cook all the way across.

I do the exact opposite, flush with the top of the cooker. Provides much better air-flow.

Well, I guess I'll split the difference. In my RF, the stsck extends down to a couple inches above the top grate, about 4-6 inches below the top of the cook chamber and about 6 inches above the lower grate.

Grate level> one grate, center on 2 grates, RF cooker about 6" down from top of the oven

Guess I could have clarified the 2" off the bottom grate is equal to center line between my 2 grates keeps the smoke consistent across all the food.
