View Full Version : Good pepper mill?

Hey all! I recently broke my salt mill (crappy plastic internals) and the pepper mill is nothing to write home about; it takes a really long time to grind pepper onto both sides of four steaks. And my wrists are worn out by the end! Have you all got good pepper mills? I think perhaps something with a crank rather than a spin-top would be so much better. There is a thread from seven years ago about pepper mills, but I can't help but think that there may have been some innovations since then.

Would be most grateful for your wisdom, dear Brethren!

I use a Turkish coffee mill to grind pepper and love it. My mill is 25 years old and never any issues. Brass internals push the price to $100 but I consider it cheap since I do not think I will ever break it.

Unicorn rock. Easy to adjust grind size and each twist grinds a lot. Better than any other expensive fancy grinders I've tried from high end stores.

I have bad wrists, so moved away from the traditional style grinders to the one with an arm. This is a cheap one that I've really liked. You can grind a lot of pepper fairly quick and it can go from fairly fine to pretty coarse.

I've made a lot of peppermills and use the Crush Grind mechanisms. Ceramic, ratcheting and adjustment is on the bottom. Make a nice clean mill. Crush Grind mills come with a 20 year warranty.

I recommend Perfex salt and pepper mills. Can be used for other spices too. You can find them on Amazon among other retailers.

Have been through a bunch of pepper mills because I was looking for a good salt grinder. Kuhn Rikon is the best I've found for salt, pepper, and spices. The ones I have are maybe 8 years old and they have since changed the design. Mine are loaded through a small plug in the bottom. New ones load from the top but have the same quality adjustable ceramic grinding innards.

If the KR mills ever break for some reason I will not hesitate to order new ones. They will do any grind you want.

I've used Unicorns for years, now have them filled with different varieties of peppercorns. But for those occasions when you want a finer-ground pepper, the Cole and Mason Derwent unit is excellent. I've never been able to adjust a Unicorn to do a satisfactory fine grind.

I use the same mill for our pepper grinding. I have had that thing like 12 years and it works great.

I bought mine after destroying several cheaper models that I destroyed over the years. Yes it was pricey but so far fail proof.

You could go with one of the many suggestions here...or you could go with the pick chosen by the people who use one in their profession every single day.

Or, you could go with the grinder from the guy that makes drum sticks.

Another vote here for the Unicorn Magnum. I've had mine around 4 years, and it is still awesome. It can really crank out the pepper. Only drawback is that the adjustment screw works itself loose and the grind gets bigger, but every few days or so I just give it a little half twist and we're all good again.

I am another Unicorn user, never been disappointed with them

Oh, for grinding black pepper for rubs and such, I use a cheap electric burr grinder for coffee, it was under $60 and it grinds up medium coarse black pepper in a jiffy.

I'm a huge fresh pepper guy. only way i'll use it, use it alot. i've had every different kind of mill that was bragged upon, including electric.

i've got four or five magnums, and for me they are the gold standard. Simple, fast grinding.
