A friend asked for Q for their birthday and with temps in the high 40s I couldn't help but break out the offset. I've been cooking all winter but using the kettle and more recently an acorn on loan from a brethren. It's not like I brave the elements too much though, a grill is parked not two steps from the front door at all times in the winter months. I haven't used the stick burner since late November/ early December. Man it feels good to be tending the fire again.

So any other northerners back at it yet?

I got rid of my ol stick burner last fall, and my new Shirley won't be ready till next month, so I'll be roughing it on the UDS a little longer. Have fun! I'm jealous

Those Shirley cookers are nice huh.

I have a ok joe longhorn that was sold to me for a song. I kinda owe Mr Shirley for getting it because when the previous owner upgraded to one he sold me it. I'm hooked one day I'll upgrade and probably go with him at which point I'll get to sell the okie to a brethren and the cycle can start anew.

Those OK joes are nice. I just had an old char griller and I still miss that drafty old rust bucket. Nothing beats the flavor of an offset IMO. And playing with fire all day ain't half bad either

I know what you mean shaggy the stick burner and my block pit produce my favorite Q. Way cleaner smoke than anything else. Truth be told I haven't touched the wsm since I got the offset.

Yeah, I feel for you guys up there in the frozen tundra states! We have a little winter weather down here but NOTHING like what ya'll have, heck it's in the low 70s right now in central Texas!
Glad you're able to fire up your pit,... enjoy!!!:clap2:

Sounds like a good day ninja. Snow has melted enuff here in the Norfeast that I can find my PBC again.
Kinda looking forward to smoking sausage outdoors again too.

But, I never owned a stick burner before. Not against them, just never pursued one.
I'm sure I will at some point. I can be compulsive at times...:heh:

New here whats a stick burner and a shirleyA "stick burner" is generally an offset smoker which has a smoking chamber with an attached firebox on it's side, giving it the name offset and it primarily burns wood, so it's called a stick burner.
A Shirley is a custom made pit made by Paul Shirley and Shirley Fabrication.

A stickburner or offset smoker is a pit with a cook chamber and a firebox on the side. The are best feed with wood splits.

Shirley is a fabricator and a brethren (tuskaloosaQ) who makes fine crafted bbq pits made right here in the usa. owners feel free to spam this thread with pics of your Shirleys.

Offset smoker aka stickburner (definitely not a shirley)

Yes sir! Glad your playing with fire again Ninja. I haven't fired up my offset in a good month or so but will today for smoking some cured sausage and tomorrow for some brisket, ribs, wings. It doesn't hurt that we're at 90* today and tomorrow with a calm breeze which makes you want to light her up.

My Cimarron is still buried deep behind the kettles on the "patio" in its winter storage. With a little (weather) luck it will be out in the open in a couple weeks, adding some beautiful TBS into the air.
