Sushi is a rice dish, not a seafood dish, contrary to popular belief.
I made some inexpensive sushi, I used the 'crab stick' item to make "California rolls, and sushi rice with a variety of vegetables and Japanese items like nori to make a bowl of really delicious sushi.
Great fun and a healthy meal even if you are feeding kids!

This, and the seasoning is probably the only difficult parts!

Nice!

I've spent quite a few years trying to introduce my friends to sushi. THIS is how I do it. Explain that it is rice, give them exactly what you've made there and bring them along slowly. After a while MOST of them are venturing out and ordering and liking sashimi.

......of course you still get the odd drama queen that gags on a bite of kappa maki and exclaims that they "just can't handle the idea of raw fish!". Well that's nice dear....but that's more or less just seaweed, rice and cucumber.

But where's the pic of knife you used to make those clean cuts? I know you have some crazy awesome Japanese knives!

A wicked Japanese knife was used in every step of the production, saving the ingredients from much anguish!

Great post!

I've been making my own sushi for quite a while. It was hands down the best date night back in College, the girls loved it.

I actually never liked Sushi until I started making it myself and saw how simple and clean it was. I "settle" quite a bit now for imitation crab meat, avocado, carrot sticks, and cream cheese in my California rolls, but if I've got time I'll go to the Dekalb Farmers Market and buy up some fresh fish and go all out.

my last spread:

Fantastic spread, wish I were there!!

Crabs here are hideously expensive so I also am using the cheap option usually nowadays.

Sounds like we live parrallel lives!

Same here, I go buy a salmon at the market sometimes and it is a sashimi party!
