G'Day Bruces' :becky:

When I became a BBQ Brother 5 or so years ago, there was no American BBQ in Australia whatsoever. 5 years go by pretty fast and even in the last 12 months there have been plenty of BBQ restaurants opening. It's the new craze in Melbourne. Myself... I started as a back yard enthusiast and will remain so, but the first Melbourne BBQ Festival was held today.

I thought it only proper to go there and take photo's to show how well things have come along since the days of me trying to actually find charcoal!:twitch:

There's now TEAMS and some very good vendors, so while I remain a back yarder I'm very proud to show you some pics of people who are more committed than myself and want to be at the front of this new cuisine in Australia.

Firstly, here was the stage.
http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae78/SmokinAussie/Melb%20BBQ%20Fest%202014/DSC_0217_zpsucwbojlb.jpg

There are a few tiny trophy's on that barrel there... but you gotta start somewhere!

Now I'm gonna move onto the pics of the teams. I got there in late afternoon, so most of the work was done. Just have a look at the names and the gear....

Then there were the vendors. Personally, I don't get why you have a team that just BBQ's for judging. If you are there for judging, why not be a vendor too. Oh well, maybe there is something I'm not getting.

Here's the vendors!

Love that kinda BBQ... and look at the way they roast those pigs!

Awesome!

Now to the sellers. Weber had a stand. Sorry No Pics. McCormick sauces and spices had a stand... sorry no pics.

But if you are still looking, you're gonna get a serious fright because of the prices of some of your BBQ gear here in Australia.

Green Mountain Grills had a Stand.

And here is a pic of a local fella custom making this tiny little offset that can barely take a single rib. Charging $2500 Aussie dollars! NO WAY!!!!

STEPH! What the fark!

Lets talk!

Well please love the fact that things are developing here and people are taking this cuisine up.

It's great to see our first BBQ Festival in Melbourne.

For the teams in the comp, I'll post a link to the results in the comp section.

Cheers!

Bill,

It really looks like the BBQ is becoming popular there more and more. Hopefully the more the common people like it might help to bring some of those prices down.

Thanks for sharing the great pictures with all of us...

BTW, what the exchange rate with the US Dollar there so we can how the prices differ with cost of cargo, customs, and brokerage fees imposed upon the sale of these goods.

That price on the Yoder is really inflated. You can call Yoder and order one right from them directly for $1894 plus shipping.

Smart Arse... They were everywhere! This will have to be the next step. The comp teams had to use Redheads Robot Poop... UGH!

The big stick burners were using Ironbark and Red Gum.

The wannabees and wankers were using Heat Beads.. those blokes were running small units so in my book, they are excused because they were having a crack. My 5 or 6 years experience with damn good lump charcoal does not make up for the enthusiasm of these young fellas!

Prices like that if I was you bro I would start blending my own line of Rubs and open a fab shop and start building smokers to sell.

Cool pics thanks I enjoyed them.

THINKING about this, Seriously!

Cheers!

I'm excited for you guys! The prices are staggering but will drop like a rock after folks start building UDS. I've always been slapped up side the head with how expensive everything is there compares to the US (well beef has caught up). Curious what that Green Mountain Daniel Boone sold for? Ship from china there is less than US.

Thanks for the coverage, yeah, those prices. Although, I can only imagine the shipping costs of a Yoder or similar large smoker clean across the ocean.

I would probably go ahead and pay the $27 for the rub.

Hi Guy,

I'm not too sure about the scene in Sydney. I am sure there is some action there, but not as much as down here in Melbourne.

Cheers!

Thank you for sharing, very interesting. At some of those prices I'm thinking I need to pack up my plasma, mig & grinders and come down under for a while.

It was a great day, I agree, I arrived mid-afternoon and hung around until after the awards. Five or six KCBS officials were on hand to supervise, officiate and present awards.

The lines for the food were astounding, some at least 75 yards long. I tried some brisket from one of the vendors that has a BBQ restaurant and it was a huge disappointment compared to what you'll get at the restaurant, i couldn't even chew through it in some places! One of the retailers was selling brisket at $100 per kilo (2.2lb)!

I'll be back next year and might even enter the contest.

Great photos, and thanks for the coverage of the event! It is an eye opener with the prices. It just goes to show that when we think that things here in the States have gone to the dogs, that we really don't have a lot to complain about. Especially when compared to another civilized nation like Australia. We got it good, and someday when it gets more popular and widespread there, maybe the prices will moderate more for the average mate to enjoy. We hope so anyway.

Thanks for the thread and the photos.

I had noticed the event being promoted on the "Neos Kosmos" Melbourne Greek newspaper online and it was interesting to see some impressions from the event.

We where in Adelaide last November and I was astounded at the prices for stuff down there.
Some heavy hits on all levels.

There looks to be a very good business opportunity for a man who knows BBQ and has connections. To be able to bring good quality BBQ equipment and supplies at a fair price could reap some major benefits.

Fancy Hanks is pretty good, so is Bluebonnet BBQ in Collingwood, IMHO they have best brisket by far in Melbourne, Bill.

Great pictures Bill! I'm glad you are starting to get some BBQ down there. It's fun and tastes great! What's not to like except for the stupid expensive prices. Obviously there is the shipping charge issue but your government must be charging some huge duties to import stuff. Wow!
