Hi everyone. I'm currently cooking on a very nice pellet smoker, but I'm looking to expand my skill set by purchasing an offset smoker. Of course, I want to do this relatively cheap as its more for learning than anything else (read as, not about to buy a Jambo)

Anyway, I've come across a Brinkman Backroads smoker. I know that Brinkman currently doesn't make the highest quality smokers, but this thing seems pretty nice and heavy duty. It actually looks almost exactly like a horizon "Marshal smoke n wagon" The seller tells me the smoker is made of 1/4", but I haven't checked that yet.

The guy is asking $1200. What does the Bretheren think its worth? Is it worth my time and money to buy this to learn how to use an offset pit? Being that I really just want to learn on it, will I be able to sell it if I bought it? I'm a little scared of the Brinkman name......

Any input is appreciated!

Looks nice enough, but I am not a fan of Brinkman. You could get a decent Char-Griller setup for under $200 if you just want to learn. There are several good tutorials for small mods to make on them, too.

I would pass. But I have an old deep seeded distain for brinkmann, char-broil, and char grill. I would go get this. And spend the rest on good meat, beer, and whiskey. Learn on it, then upgrade to a nicer pit if you want.

EDIT:
So, I had to do some snooping. I read : Constructed of fully welded 1/4 inch thick steel. 20" diameter cooking chamber and firebox with 36" long cooking chmaber for over 1,000 square inches of available cooking surface, 40" x 20" slide-out worktable and wood storage box.

So,... maybe go for it. I hope a bretheren that owns one will pipe up,... this sounds like a pretty decent smoker. I think I'd def. go look at it, put my hands on it. Do some haggling. .........I think I like that pit.......

I'd go look at it. If its 1/4" in good shape its worth the price. Brinkman hasnt always sucked. They used to have cheapos then also 1-2 Good Ones.

If you want a trailer mounted smoker and it is 1/4" then the price is good. If you just want something to learn on there are several backyard type offsets that can be purchased for less. If you just want to spend $1,000 there are some quality pits in that price range. I would offer him less and see what happens.

If yall got Academy Sports a $500 Wrangler or $400 Pecos is a Good starter pit - cut some 1/8-3/16" Tunning plates is all you will need to do to them. If you take care of them they will last 10+ years.

Whelp......there another smoker in my arsenal!! I went to look this morning and it was about what I expected. It was dirtier than I expected but a quick rinse and it's much better.

The guy took $950 for it.

I'll post pictures later. I'm on my phone and it tells me that I can't upload pictures for some reason.

I think you're gonna like that pit. It's the larger version of the 1/4" steel Cimmaron which was $900 new when they were still available.
This one has a bigger diameter ans will be easier to tune than the the Cimmaron.

Enjoy it!

Being a little harsh, don't ya think?

Some digging finds that a Brinkman Longhorn 1/4" steel offset pit (same size as this pit sans trailer) is $1700 new.

Easy Bludawg being a little harsh...1/4" steel is 1/4" steel regardless what name is on the smoker.

Added pics. I burned it off yesterday and worked on trying to control temps etc. Looks to be pretty even until the very right side in which it loses 25 to 50 degrees.

If you're happy with then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Master cooking on it and you'll be able to cook on anything. Good luck.
