Any of you use a shop vac to clean out your firebox? Ive been using a cheap stanley for cleaning up my Traeger after cooks... works pretty well... but it needs upgrading. Filters / bags are crazy $$... so curious as to thoughts and ideas .

Thanks,
Gerry

I use a bucket head, it snaps onto a 5 gallon bucket, really nice when you want to vac pellets too.

I use my shop vac to clean out my UDS after I scrape up the pile of ashes. The hose end gets kind of dirty, so I have to remember to wipe it off before vacuuming the car.

They do make shop vac specifically for cleaning out ash from fireplaces. I just use our regular to clean out my pit though

I just have an old shop vac brand 3 gallon I think is the size for cleaning out my UDS, luckily most of my cooking now days is on my offset and I can brush it out the door into a 5 gallon bucket.

I use a PowerSmith PAVC101 ash vac. The fine filter keeps dust down. All of the components are made to deal with "warm ashes".
You can use it for the smoker and indoor fireplace.

Ditto on the Buckethead from Hone Depot. Cheap and I don't mind if it gets beat up.

I bought this guy a while back

Works great for my Yoder. I just clean out the bag every now and then and then reuse it.

I use a 2.5 gallon Lowe's shop vac. Works great, probably have just over 2 years of dedicated service cleaning out my Vision Kamado. I don't use it for anything else though. It is a dedicated ash vac.

Do you use a bag around the filter so it does not instantly clog? Are the bags reusable? Filters are expensive, I have not found the bags for fine particulate readily, although I hear HD & Lowe's carry them.

My Costco Vision Classic B is difficult to clean out the ash, I don't like to pull out the firebowl to get to the ashes. I seem to think I can get the crevice tool through the bottom vent for ash removal, but I don't want to render my shop vac unusable.

I have been looking at the PowerSmith ash vac as well. Looks like it's the best value for a dedicated ash vacuum.

I use my 5 gallon Shop Vac to get the fine ashes out of the bottom of my BGE's after I get the big stuff out with an ash tool. Take the BGE completely apart and get everything as clean as I can. Try to do it before any really long cooks (Pork Butt) so I know the airflow will be good.

Never had any problems.

A trick I learned from a guy when I was doing some plaster work in the house...pull as many paper towels as needed(in one piece) to wrap around the filter like a bandage. Wet the paper towels and wring them out as much as possible. Wrap them around the filter...they will cling to each other and will filter out the fine dust very well. When it clogs, take it off and repeat the process.

I used this technique attached to a finish sander and was able to sand for about 30 minutes at a time before it would clog with plaster dust.

I tried it but it clogged instantly ( UDS )
